little drabble for @nanamiweek ! late ik (day 4) β’οΉ masterlist
The sun is beating down, but not as much as the struggle under the umbrella. You try to put sunscreen on your daughter, but she just won't.
"Stop running around, you only have sunscreen on one leg!"
"But it's cold, mom!"
"It's necessary, sweetheart..."
Nanami sighs softly, crouching next to your son, the calmer of the two, focused on burying his feet in the sand as if it were a secret mission.
Your skin already glows with a light tan, your black one-piece swimsuit tied perfectly around your waist. Your hair is slightly messy, grains of sand stuck to your arms, and your laughter echoes every time your daughter struggles and giggles.
Nanami looks at you. He's supposed to help, but he can't. He's frozen.
He watches you struggle with a recalcitrant child, sweat beading on your forehead, a smear of cream on your collarbone, and sand in your eyebrows... and he thinks you look amazing. Not just beautifulβradiant. He's so lucky you're the mother of his children and his wife.
And somewhere between the commotion, your children's protests, and your hands flailing around, you turn your head to him, gasping for breath.
"Kento! Maybe a little help?!"
He blinks, comes back to reality, a small, amused smile on his lips.
"You looked magnificent in your struggle," he murmurs, straightening. "Almost heroic."
"Kento, I'm going to smear the sunscreen in your mouth if you keep this up."
He laughs softly. He takes your daughter in his arms, his movements steady and calm. The child fidgets and moans but eventually gives in to her father's firm, gentle touch.
"Do you think we'll manage to put cream on them before they melt?" you ask, finally sitting down, breathless.
"Honestly? No." He sits next to you, gently slides a hand down your back, and adds in a whisper, "But look at them... they're in great shape, they're not going to melt."
You rest your head on his shoulder, and for a few seconds, despite the sand, the screams, the splashes, and the protests of your capricious children... everything is perfect.
Nanami honestly thinks he's the happiest man on this beach.
CAREER DAY β NANAMI KENTO
β³ Summary: It's your favorite day of the school year, and you've never met Yuji's father... until now.
β³ WC: 4.2k
β³ AN: my submission for @nanamiweek's Day 1 Papamin prompt! I had such a blast writing this one, I've truly missed my favorite blonde. Perhaps this has the makings for a little mini-collection of Nanami, kid Yuji, and teacher shenanigans. β³ Links: one | TWO | THREE |
Youβd been up to your eyeballs in glitter, paper cups, and rocket fuel caffeine since six oβclock sharp.Β
Not a complaint in sight. You adored Bring Your Parent to School Day almost as much as your students did. There was something endlessly endearing about the way they paraded their grown-ups around theΒ classroom like rare PokΓ©mon cards, puffed up with pride, introducing themΒ to friends as if they'd rolled up in a limousine rather than a Subaru.Β
βThis is my mom!β one girl might yell, face luminous with excitement and star-struck eyes. βShe does peopleβs eyebrows.βΒ
Gasps all around. You would barely be able to keep a straight face.Β
The professions were almost always lost on your second-graders, theirΒ tongues tripping merrily over syllables like βchiropractorβ andΒ βestheticianβ but it didnβt matter. Their awe wasnβt in the job. It was in theΒ magic of presence. That Mom or Dad had stepped out of the nebulous, grown-up world to sit on tiny plastic chairs and drink juice boxes besideΒ them β it made everything feel a little shinier.Β
You loved it, honestly. A soft, well-earned reprieve from math drills and shoelace catastrophes. It warmed you from the inside out to see the little duos in action β hands clasped, sneakers swinging under desks, prideΒ glowing from every corner.Β
Most of the parents youβd met already β familiar faces from conferences and after-school sports games, or quick hellos in the pickup line. The day was as much about touching base with them as it was about stepping into the background and letting the kids run the show.Β
Except for one unfamiliar face paired to a brand new name.Β
Title: Bento Box Banter Summary: One early Sunday morning, Nanami embarks on an investigative mission seeking the answer to one question, only to be left with another. WC: 4.7k A/N: @nanamiweek is finally here, and I am elated. For today's entry, I found it fitting to revisit an old classic, with a twist. Loosely based on the first ever Nanami fic I wrote almost exactly a year ago, here is my entry for Day 1: Papamin prompt. Also on AO3
To exploit an imbalance of information is to control its outcome.
Information asymmetry.Β
It is both the means and the end of the mission Nanami finds himself on this very early Sunday morning, as the sparsely occupied space is lit in a soft fluorescent stillness that reflects a city that hasnβt fully roused from its slumber yetβjudging by the way he just mishandled his sole objective, neither has he.
Nanamiβs task was simple: to discreetly keep an eye on his target and to carefully observe her moves without being noticed. She appeared to be unpredictable at first glance, but the longer he tailed her, the more he realized that there was a deliberately crafted pattern beneath the apparent noise.
In hindsight, given his close familiarity with his mark, he shouldnβt have expected any less of her.Β
Years of field experience as a sorcerer, encompassing a fair share of stealth and recon-based assignments, should have ostensibly sufficed to prepare him for the comparatively small task of snooping on someoneβs grocery shopping.
And yet.
For the better part of twenty minutes, things had gone relatively smoothly. Heβd observed her from afarβfirst as she hovered around the produce section, loading her handheld basket with tomatoes, zucchinis and lemons, then as she trudged towards the walk-in fridges by the meat counter, picking up two packs of chicken breasts, before she finally heading towards the aisles, starting with the section carrying the spices.
Nanami had discreetly watched all this while keeping a safe distance by strategically nesting himself between a tall stack of unboxed crates and the side wall, just by some refrigerators, a view that conveniently granted him a vast angle on the rest of the front ends of the aisles as he pretended to be taken up with making the arduous choice between blueberry and strawberry-flavored yogurt.
He did have a very close call at some point, nearly discovered after sheβd abruptly turned around from where sheβd been perusing the spices and retraced her steps towards the produce section once more, stopping just short of the stack of crates heβd slipped behind before turning her attention towards the leafy greens. Nanami held his breath in the moment, feeling incredibly foolish for the duration of what felt like too long of a suspended moment, before he watched her finally reach for some fresh parsley that she then neatly tucked into a plastic bag and made her way back towards the aisles.
Fresh instead of dry for the parsley, he thinks, with a light, knowing chuckle. Itβs the little things that stick.
Once she returns to the aisles, the path she employs looks haphazard at first: spices, oils, back to the spices, then to the sauces. He maintains a discreet distance, trailing several aisles behind, noting the meticulous way by which she checks off each item on her small notepad, a testament to her organized nature. It takes Nanami a few minutes of observation to finally realize that sheβs likely shopping for her ingredients in the order they would be written in the recipeβs instructions, mentally visualizing the steps and collecting the required components along the way.Β
Nanami smiles as he recreates the path sheβs taken and the ingredients heβs watched her pickβby process of elimination, it could be one of two likely dishes, and her next choice of ingredient will surely confirm which oneβfinally, heβll get the coveted intelligence that will lead him to triumph.
For what happens next, Nanami knows he can only blame himself.Β
Itβs almost as though it materializes suddenly, treacherously, with the express purpose of derailing him from his goal, right here in front of him, on right-hand side: One last, lonely pack of extremely elusive Danish social tea biscuits from a brand that has been so hard to come by locally that Nanami had long given up seeking it out.Β
Itβs been years, and yet, it revisits him in the moment, clear as ever; when you let him drag you to what must have been the sixth or seventh specialty grocery store of the day, after youβd watched him make a beeline for the cookies section and engage in a frantic search amongst the rows of imported treats before sighing deeply when he appeared to come up empty-handed once more.
βI have truly never seen you like this,β youβd told Nanami at the time, a mixture of amusement and bewilderment coloring your tone as you observed the usually poised sorcerer in uncharacteristic disarray.
βBlame Gojo for instigating this,β he said under gritted teeth as he continued to scan the shelf, as if expecting a different outcome. βBringing me those biscuits from overseas out of the blue last week, knowing full well how painstaking it was to go cold turkey on them all those years ago. Now that Iβve tasted them againβ¦β
You let out a contemplative hum. βAnd by βcold turkeyβ, what you really mean is that you simply no longer had access to them, correct?βΒ Β
βSure, but I could have stopped anytime, if thatβs what youβreββ Nanami cut off as he realized just how defensively desperate he must be sounding.
βAh, youβre teasing me,β he says, glancing at you just in time to watch the cheeky smile playing at your lips. βThatβs fine, Iβll accept your apology and take pleasure in watching you swallow your words once you get a taste of these delicaciesβ¦β His brows furrowed, eyes visibly clouded with genuine concern behind his tinted lenses. βIf I find them, that is,β heβd muttered, resuming his fruitless search with renewed tenacity.
βMy goodness, Kento. These biscuits might just spell your downfall,β youβd responded, now thoroughly tickled.
The veracity of words youβd said in jest echoes loudly in the silence of the near-empty store. The elation that propelled this undoubtedly long trip down memory lane quickly transfigures into concern as he snaps his attention back to the task at hand, realizing only now that the subject of his surveillance had long left his sight.
And just like that, to the tempting allure of the cookies from his childhood, heβd lost her.
Nanami now makes his way towards the aisle, stopping right where sheβd stood, as though this newfound positioning could somehow magically grant him the power of omniscience. He pinches the bridge of his nose as he realizes how close heβs gotten to finally discovering what sheβs been planning, only to squander his lead at the eleventh hour, rendering moot the levels to which heβs stooped in order to win this little game.
An active Grade 1 Jujutsu sorcerer, and somehow this is currently his biggest point of upheaval.
His alertness fails him once more, a point at which it crosses his mind that he might actually have to work on honing those instincts of hisβthis presence is one he detects almost too late, one that announces itself just as he is about to retrace his steps to embark on a search through a finger that unexpectedly pokes him in his side.
βHey Dad, Iβm done.β

Thunder rattles the pewter clouds in a rumble of showers, pelting the ground with its evening lullaby. The cows, pig, and goats are tucked into golden pools of hay with gentle snores.
There's one window in the farmhouse that remains alight, soft giggles coming from the other side as your two oldest girls and your youngest little boy all squeeze in a heap of warmth on top of your husband, Kento, huddled around a book.
You can hear them upstairs with your third oldest baby girl attached at your hip as you make her a warm glass of water for the evening.
"You're gonna miss storytime, Noodle." You smile at her as she hides in your pajama pants, pawing at your sweater for uppies.
"Don't you wanna find out what Daddy's reading tonight?"
She hides her face in your neck and wraps her chubby arms halfway around your face.
"C'mon, we'll go up there together." You whisper as you turn out the light.
Happy Birthday Nanami! π
