“And he gave me a flower from the playground.”
Your daughter has been going on and on, giving you all the intricate details of her newfound crush at school. Loud footsteps in the background overpower her light voice.
“Honey, I’m home,” Nanami shouts down the hall.
Before you can stand up from the couch, your daughter darts out of the room toward her dad, jumping into his arms. You join them, giving him a quick kiss on the lips.
“Eww! Do you guys have to do that?” She crosses her tiny arms.
“Yes. I love your mom, Princess.” He looks down at you with gleaming eyes.
“Dad, how do you know when you love someone?”
Nanami drops his briefcase onto the floor and clears his throat.
“I knew I loved your mother when I realized I didn’t want to spend another day without her.” He smiles as he looks at you.
“Mom, does that mean I love Ethan?”
Nanami’s eyes shoot wide open, and he clears his throat again.
“Who is Ethan?”
Your daughter looks down, a slight red tint appearing on her cheeks.
“Ethan is my crush, Dad. I love him.”
“Princess, you’re in the first grade,” Nanami says, rubbing a hand over his face.
“So? You said that when you love someone, you don’t want to spend a day without them. I want to see Ethan every day.”
Nanami takes a deep breath.
“Honey, why don’t you go to your room and start on your homework?”
She rolls her eyes.
“Fine, Mommy.”
She runs up the stairs. By the time her bedroom door shuts, Nanami is sinking into the living room couch.
“She’s six. She doesn’t need to be worried about boys. I thought I wouldn’t have to deal with this until she was sixteen.” He blows out a breath, rubbing a hand over his face.
“Don’t worry about it. Everyone has at least one crush in elementary school. She’ll grow out of it.” You rub his shoulders gently.
“I hope she’s still my little girl.” His eyes begin to water.
“She loves you, baby. She’ll always be your little girl. You’re all she talks about—especially when you sneak her lemonade for breakfast.”
You both let out a quiet laugh. He wraps his arm around you before resting his head against your chest.
