Australia and the G7 Launch NMI-Q to Standardize Quantum Technology

Quantum technology is fast expanding, and Australia and the G7 have inked a major agreement to set norms and benchmarks. A "unprecedented agreement," this effort coordinates quantum technological benchmarks.
A key focus of this relationship is the creation of NMI-Q. This global initiative was launched in October 2025 when Paris' national metrology institutions (NMIs) signed an MoU.
People and Goals of NMI-Q
Measurement science (or “metrology lab”) institutes from major economies form the NMI-Q cooperation.
The program comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the Australian National Metrology Institute. Goal: NMI-Q accelerates quantum computing, sensing, and communication technology development and global deployment by ensuring reliable and comparable measurements across borders. Arrange best practices production and dissemination.

New quantum technologies must be based on precise and unbiased measurement data to encourage broad innovation and profitable commercialization.
Standardizing Performance Metrics Globally
Comparisons of quantum systems have been difficult due to the lack of objective, uniform measurements.
The NMI-Q objective is to provide global quantum system performance indicators. Qubit performance, error rate computation, and quantum sensing sensitivity will be measured.
France's LNE director general, Thomas Grenon, stressed that “everyone will create their own” without a standard baseline, making industry comparisons harder.
In a Fast-Changing Field, Scientific Verification
The deal cements the scientific foundation needed to quantify and verify quantum advances and claims.
This focus on precise quantification addresses an issue in the sector, where rapid technological innovation and inflated promises elicit distrust from the scientific and investment groups. Through metrology, the alliance hopes to boost fundamental science and quantum development confidence and economic viability.
Greater G7 Commitments
Non-singular NMI-Q launch expands G7 Leaders' quantum technologies vow. Future national security and economic progress depend on these technologies, according to participating countries.
This standardization effort matches 2025 goals. The G7 pledged to coordinate quantum progress in research and development, standardization, public-private investment strategies, workforce development, and security in June 2025.
After signing the MOU, the National Metrology Institutes are preparing for their new duties. As a founding member of NMI-Q, the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has been developing measurement methods for quantum equipment such single-photon sources, quantum clocks, and sensors. By building a framework for sharing and incorporating different quantum results into international standards, NMI-Q ensures that quantum achievements worldwide are quantifiable, reliable, and trustworthy.
