I remember how strict and miserable people were about other fan characters back on Deviantart. It was long ago, but still puts a sour taste in my mouth, every time I remember. Straight up demanded people to change characters for their likings or otherwise your character got marked as a 'Mary Sue' or accused you of design theft. Worst case, the people that got attacked left the fandom, because they got scared or were just done with everything happening.
