I love Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café (warts and all), and I'm also very fond of Fried Green Tomatoes the movie, because I saw it first, and I fell in love with Mary Stuart Masterson, and also became a fan of Kathy Bates. And it downplays the lesbianism like whoah and makes Buddy Sr. a beard for Ruth, but, you know, the nineties.
But what really enrages me is the implication/popular theory that Idgie and Ninny is the same person. Enough that I completely went off on some poor guy who mentioned it on Facebook.
It's not just because it’s against book canon, or because the details don't match even in the film (unless you believe that Idgie married her own brother), but because it would mean that Idgie eventually marries a man, starts wearing floral pattern dresses, is shocked by Evelyn's vengeful Towanda side, and speaks about Ruth and Stump as if they were someone else's family, while openly acknowledging her love for her biological child.
And that's just such a betrayal of who Idgie is as a person. There's nothing wrong with being Ninny. Ninny is lovely. But she's not even remotely similar to Idgie. Suggesting that they're one and the same is essentially saying "it's just a phase."
A heart can be broken, but it will keep beating just the same.
