You’ve heard of Yacht Rock, but I’d argue that we need a subcategory for Yacht Funk and the top band on the list would surely be Haircut 100. Here’s their first three UK 12” singles — “Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl),” “Love Plus One,” and “Fantastic Day.” Their lyrics may have redefined the meaning of “slight,” but man, could they play. Their abilities with arrangements, killer horns and uptight percussion were fully formed right out of the gate; that first single still slays today with its crisp guitar, blazing sax and unstoppable breakneck pace. As a goofy fun-fact, bandleader Nick Heyward worked in a design company before the band broke big, and actually designed the series of 12” covers seen here.
