Be More Chill: The Graphic Novel by Ned Vizzini, David Levithan & Nick Bertozzi - blurrypetals review
originally posted feb. 23, 2021 - ★★☆☆☆
I have been a huge fan of Be More Chill: The Musical since December 2017. It is absolutely one of my all time favorite things and some of the characters in it are all time faves. I did read the original book that same December, just before I listened to the musical cast recording for the first time and, despite it sitting at a 3 of 5 on my Goodreads, I think I really forgot how unwelcoming and different the original story was in comparison to its (superior) musical counter until just now, in reading the graphic novel. The reason this is a 2 of 5 when the original was a 3 of 5 is that this was just basically the same damn thing all over again but with bad art and less humor this time. Story wise, everything I said in my 2017 review still stands.
Middle School Monday: Houdini: The Handcuff King by Jason Lutes & Nick Bertozzi
At the beginning of the 20th century, Harry Houdini was the most famous man in America. He was a magician whose skills amazed everyone, and he had devoted a huge portion of his life to figuring out how to escape from handcuffs, strait jackets, and other restraints. This graphic biography focuses on one of his most famous stunts, which took place on the Harvard Bridge in Cambridge in 1908. Readers will see for themselves how his skills combined with a secret to help him survive a situation that seemed impossible, and how his escape stunts made him even more famous.
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who love history, magic, graphic nonfiction, and secrets!

This is my personal diagram for comic book art styles. Being a list maker and constantly thinking about this topic, I drew it up with all my favorites as examples. And yeah, this is always on my mind, so I wanted to lay it out to give it some shape, to help me understand. This isn’t a contest or “who’s better than who” -- I also left out a million other names. These are just the ones I always think about.
