But, can you or Cyran describe what the magical lines in his study would look like? Does it look like a piece of cloth, a sphere, a piece of paper, parchment, papyrus?)

A sphere it is. Not of the reflective glass sphere type, but of gentle light distortion without much feeling of mass or weight. When touched it will dissipate and leave an illusion behind. It covers only a certain small radius and its image isn't fully replacing reality, but overlays at certain opacity.
The person experiencing the illusion isn't actually changing location, but they CAN still loose orientation of they get lost too much in the imagery before them. But given that these records are usually not very long and not fully opaque, the safety of the viewer is most often guaranteed. ;-) Bystanders wouldn't be able to perceive the illusion, by the way, unless they stand right by the person who activated it. Viewed from the side, it will only look like a muddy faint fog in the area.
