NGC 7822
NGC 7822 is a very young and hot star-forming area, nearby at a distance of only 3,000 light-years in our galaxy. It spans a radius of 75 light-years, so it appears fairly large in a backyard telescope, about X3 that of a full moon. In late summer, it is located above the North Star. However, it is far too faint to be seen in detail without astrophotography. The predominant red colour suggests a hydrogen-rich, star-forming area.
The bright star at the centre is illuminating the immediate core. Its surface temperature is about X 7 that of our sun, and the luminosity is 100,000 times the intensity. Indeed, it is one of the hottest stars in our immediate Milky Way neighbourhood.
Our attention is drawn to the elongated structures at the centre, reminiscent of the “Pillars of Creation”, challenging us to contemplate the interstellar winds and gravitational forces responsible.
I photographed NGC 7822 from my garden in Strasbourg France on a single night in August 2024. This is an ensemble of 80 photographs, where each photo was a 3 minute exposure (4 hours of astrophotography).

NGC 7822 - The Question Mark Nebula I attempted this target earlier in the year using the L-eNhance filter and once I got the L-eXtreme I wanted to give it another go. Captured over 3 nights at the end of imaging sessions, I was able to capture 4.5 hours and it blows my 3 hours with the L-eNhance away. Because it's more North then East, this is currently a difficult target for me, and that doesn't include the clouds I had rolling in! Explanation: Hot, young stars and cosmic pillars of gas and dust seem to crowd into NGC 7822. At the edge of a giant molecular cloud toward the northern constellation Cepheus, the glowing star forming region lies about 3,000 light-years away. Within the nebula, bright edges and dark shapes stand out in this colorful skyscape. The image includes data from narrowband filters, mapping emission from atomic oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur into blue, green, and red hues. The emission line and color combination has become well-known as the Hubble palette. The atomic emission is powered by energetic radiation from the central hot stars. Their powerful winds and radiation sculpt and erode the denser pillar shapes and clear out a characteristic cavity light-years across the center of the natal cloud. Stars could still be forming inside the pillars by gravitational collapse but as the pillars are eroded away, any forming stars will ultimately be cutoff from their reservoir of star stuff. This field of view spans over 40 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 7822.

NGC7822 Emission Nebula
NGC7822 is a young star forming complex in the constellation of Cepheus. The complex encompasses the emission region designated Sharpless 171, and the young cluster of stars named Berkeley 59. The complex is believed to be some 3,000 light-years distant,with the younger components aged no more than a few million years. The complex also includes one of the hottest stars discovered which is one of the primary sources illuminating the nebula.
