769 photographers and astronomers around the world, representing 66 countries, submitted more than 4,000 images to this year’s ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. The shortlisted photos represent a range of phenomena from aurorae and stars to planets and the moon, captured around the globe. Some photographers focus on the juxtaposition of space and the human environment while others take telescopically captured snapshots of distant galaxies and nebulae, creating striking composite images.

Winners will be announced on September 17, the day after which the public exhibition will open at London’s National Maritime Museum. The show is also accompanied by the book Astronomy Photographer of the Year, Collection 15. Tumblrs very own ASTRONOMY 101 will be assisting in picking out the top 10 astronomy photographers of the year 2026! We are super excited to be apart of this again for the 5th year in a role. Top 3 winners will also be posted to our Tumblr profile and will be pinned on top of our profile for 1 month. Good luck!

Sh2-101: the Tulip Nebula
First image off my new rig after five months of fiddling and calibrating.
Shot at 1000mm effective focal length with a total exposure time of 13 or so hours. Narrowband emissions rendered in the Hubble (SHO) palette, with some masked blending to render the rich background hydrogen clouds in Cygnus in their true red instead of uh. neon green.
Very happy to be editing again. Never forget how beautiful this universe is and how lucky we are to be here.

Deep sky imaging my favourite objects...
Photographed in 4.5 hours over several nights - This is the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635), 8.800 lightyears from earth, seven lightyears across and can be found in the cassiopeia constellation.
