NGC 7000 and the Cygnus Wall
NGC-7000 is an immense area of dust and hot hydrogen gas viewed in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan. It has the colloquial name “the North America Nebula”, because the outline resembles the Gulf of Mexico.
The telltale pink colour reveals it as a region of star formation, with a very intense area called the “Cygnus Wall”, seen here at the right. The contrasting dark regions are part of the “Cygnus Fissure”, a band of interstellar dust in our arm of the galaxy.
The distance to NGC-7000 is 2,600 light-years and spans 140 light-years. The Cygnus Wall is only 20 light-years long, but this is 3600 times longer than the diameter of our solar system.
I photographed NGC-7000 from my garden in Strasbourg France. I captured 100 images (3 minutes each) in August 2025 and combined it with 80 images from September 2023 (9 hours of photography).
Photo of NGC 7000 / the North American nebula (southern part), the bright star on the top left corner is ξ Cygni. Might rework it later since this one still has a bit too much gradient/haze due to the full moon when I took the photos. In most cases, emission nebula are the result of gas clouds being ionised by the high energy UV radiation coming from very Hot (and often massive) stars/star cluster. In the case of NGC 7000 the star(s) responsible for most of the ionisation was an unknown for quite a long time, it is only in 2004 that the star responsible for the ionisation was located. This star (actually a binary system according to later publication) known as J205551.3+435225 is located behind the dark region of the nebula (bottom right corner of the photo) which explains why it was only recently identified.
(My best guess of the position of J205551.3+435225 in my picture according to what I can find in the original publication and in the SIMBAD database)
One last thing, that star was later nicknamed Bajamar Star, which comes from the original Spanish name for the Bahamas island.
North American & Pelican Nebula Better stars make better images.... here is a reprocess of last year's data plus an additional 30 min taken this year. The 30 min didn't add much, but better processing tequniques did. Learning how to effectively use star removal for processing has been a nemesis of mine, until now . 1 - With stars 2 - starless (this time my fav!) . 45 x 240s (6-5-2021) 7 x 300s (6-6-2021) 20 x 360s (9-11-2021) 6 x 300s (6-21-2022) 800 ISO - Bortle 8 . 68 Cygni & NGC 7000 - 2 Panel Mosaic The North American Nebula (NGC 7000), along with the Pelican Nebula, is a popular summertime astrophotography target. Much less popular is its neighbor, the star 68 Cygni and the surrounding dust clouds. With my success doing mosaics with the Sadr Region of Sadr, I decided to attempt coupling 68 Cygni with some pre-existing data taken of the North American Nebula. I had some issues trying to use one stack of my data from last year, so I cut it out completely and used 3.5 hours of data along with 5 hours of 68 Cygni data taken on July, 3 - 4, 2022. So, instead of 10.5 hours of integration I ended up with 8.5. Not nearly as big or as time consuming as my Sadr Mosaic, this felt more challenging in processing due to the amount of stars, dark nebula regions and intense reds. Clipping the shadows / blacks was a real issue and difficult to avoid while trying to bring out some vibrance in the nebula. . North American & Pelican Nebula - Wanted to go back and attempt some new palette options since I am using a duo-band filter with the L-eNhanced. I extracted Ha & Oiii channels in Astro Pixel Processor, and then used the Extract Ha-Oiii Mono option to give a luminance, or in this case, simulate a substitute for a Sii channel. I used the HOss blending method - assigning the Ha and Oiii extractions to the Red Channel, then the Ha-Oiii extraction to both the Green and Blue channels. This was all done in APP. I then processed the image in Photoshop. I like this palette option as it feels a bit more muted but can still be vibrant, while showing off a little more detail. . 45 x 240s (6-5-2021) 7 x 300s (6-6-2021) 20 x 360s (9-11-2021) 6 x 300s (6-21-2022) 800 ISO - Bortle 8 .
