hey! so i have been directed to you. to make a long story short, i thought that the network that dorian/calormen started, narnianexus, was still up and running and the url had just been changed to narnianetwork. then i found out from dorian directly that it had been disbanded due to creative differences? or something? the last time i saw the network was a couple months ago. i wanted to follow some of the members and reblog some content but idk what happened or who was in it
Hi anon!
Okay so first, yes, narnianetwork and narnianexus are completely different! While there are/were overlapping members in both networks they are actually separate networks. Narnianetwork is the network I run with @stormbreaker, @alwaysinnarnia, & @bilbos! Narnianexus, on the other hand, was created/run by @calormen and @quecksilvereyes!
I knew that narnianexus was on hiatus because the creators did ask all the members if they still wanted to be part of the discord chat while it was on hiatus. Unfortunately I had to choose to leave it since I knew I would be very busy this summer with personal stuff. I didn’t actually know narnianexus itself was completely gone since the last time I checked the blog was still up and running (I just actually looked today and saw that the blog itself is gone).Â
As for members, I talked with @quecksilvereyes and @dryadsofnarnia a lot since I was under the Gentle Banner. If you’re looking for more members you should go through the #nexuschat tag they had been tracking since most/all of the members used that tag when posting their creations for the challenges and stuff.

@narnianexus Second Excursion The Horse and His Boy Characters: Lasaraleen Tarkeena //Her whole being dilated in an atmosphere of luxury. It was the background she required, the only climate she could breathe in// As much as I didn’t want to solely focus on the opulence of Lasaraleen’s life it is such a significant part of the book that I can’t not talk about it. What has always intrigued me about this character is the insight it gives into the world of Calormen. Not much is written about her past the surface level, but her actions throughout the book stand out more than her description. Despite being the superficial girl she is originally presented as, her loyalty has always stood out. She remains steadfast to her childhood friend, and although she finds her choices funny, supports Aravis.

The Horse and His Boy Characters: Aravis Tarkeena
//She wasn’t looking for a knight, she was looking for a sword//
Aravis’ character exemplifies being an independent woman. Not only do we have someone who flees a life of arranged marriages and abuse, but does so on her own accord, dressed as a man, with nothing but a horse and a scythe. She is one of my favorite characters because of her ferocity throughout the book.
There is a lot of debate about Lewis’ thoughts on women/girls, especially referencing Susan, but I think we often forget about Aravis’ strength and the type of unconventional female role she represents. Her story is one that may have not typically been presented to children, especially young girls, but I think she acts as a unique role model.
There was a little boy, once, held behind stone walls, cold and damp. His room was above the kitchen, and whenever the hearth was used, the floors would heat, and he would smell the food, and the fire, earthy and soft in his nose. He would crawl out of his bed, and lie down on the floor, trying to find out what the kitchen staff was making, which spices they used, which meat, what vegetables. And his wet nurse would sit with him, his hands in hers, old and worn and soft as they were, and he’d tell her all the things he’d smell.
Years later, when the little boy was just a boy, now, and his nephew was born under fireworks and screams, he still remembered her voice, soft and tilted and rough, as if her vocal chords were still new to her, and untrained in her throat. He still remembered how her hair looked when she would put him to sleep, and kiss his forehead, her curls mixing with his, grey and red amongst his black. He still remembered the way she’d sway him, slowly, carefully, as if he was something precious that would break under too much pressure.
“My dear child”, she’d say, quietly, and hold him up into the sunlight creeping through the small windows, kiss his cheeks, one after the other. “Let me tell you a story.” And then she’d lift him on her lap, her fingers intertwined with his, and she’d tell him stories.
Stories about talking Beasts and kings and queens who were but children when they were crowned, about witches and dryads, and naiads and spirits. She’d tell him about the people hidden in the woods and under it, about the grief straining the lands, in her hushed, hoarse voice as a quiet breeze settled in his hair. “There’s old Narnia breathing and surviving all around you, my darling”, she’d say, and run her hands through his curls, tangled and wild as they were each night. And each night, she’d detangle it, softly and carefully. “Tell me a story, sweetheart”, she’d say, and he would repeat her stories back to her, giggling and smiling, and curling into her.
There was a big red maple tree in the courtyard, and when the sun was just right, it filtered through its leaves in warm oranges and yellows and reds, and the little boy would sit at his window and hold his face into the light, closing his eyes. His wet nurse would laugh behind him, softly, and braid his hair as it got longer. And as she laughed, the wind would rustle the tree’s leaves, and change the colour of the light hitting the boy’s face.
 *
She loved this boy, with every groaning inch of her tree, and every new leaf growing from it, loved him and his little hands, his hair, his eyes and his voice. She loved the boy she was raising, right under the regent’s eyes and his blood stained hands, she loved this boy who wouldn’t be another Caspian with bark and mud and iron under his fingernails. This boy wouldn’t silence the last of the Talking Beasts, and he wouldn’t look at a Naiad and see only dancing feet and flowing dresses, wouldn’t look at old Narnia and see only land to plow.
She loved this boy, and loved the stories she wove in and around him, taught him his own history in bedtime stories and nursery rhymes. “Let me tell you a story”, she’d say, and run her hands over his own, let him feel all the ridges on her bark, and then she’d tell him what she could still remember, frozen and motionless as she was for most of her life.
She loved this boy, and he loved her, until the regent looked at her with a sneer, and hacked down the beautiful red maple tree in the courtyard, removed the roots with it.
“You’re too old for a wet nurse now”, he told the boy as she crumbled to soil and sighed a last gust of wind into his room.

One of my favorite things about this book is how different it is from the other stories in the series. Obviously, it has a lot of similarities, but the narrative and perspectives are so fresh that it feels brand new. There is also a new level of darkness in this novel that varies from the rest of the series.Â
Shasta/Cor is such a great character because Lewis writes him like a real boy that faces very real struggles; especially when we see him interact with Aravis. Our introduction to a young Northern boy in a foreign land and culture gives a new perspective of the world in the wardrobe.Â

@narnianexus | Second Excursion: Chosen Book and Characters
I am so excited about this event because I will get to dive into The Horse and His Boy. This book has challenged and excited me more than any other book in the Narnia series and I can’t wait to dig into its plot and characters. The Calormen Empire has always intrigued me so I will be focusing on characters that come from that unique culture!
Characters: Aravis Tarkheena, Shasta/Cor & Corin, and Lasaraleen Tarkheena
