submission - REVIEW
I love some good Scorose, even though that can be very difficult to find, so I was excited to start reading this one.
The premise is definitely interesting, and the plot is pretty unique. I'm not sure I buy it as totally believable, but it was still refreshing to read something different, so I'm okay with that.
Basically, Rose Weasley has run away from Hogwarts and from home. She has left a book behind with letters to seven people in her life that she feels she needs to write to in order to explain her decision to leave. They are all friends and family, and one additional person - Scorpius Malfoy.
The way the story is set up, we learn that Rose and Scorpius really didn't have much interaction before she left. They are in different houses - she in Gryffindor and he in Ravenclaw - and the only major interaction they have is when they both find themselves sharing a corner of the library late at night on a semi-regular basis. So the fact that she chooses to leave this book to Scorpius to read all her letters about why she left kinda seems out of the blue to me, and a little bit of a stretch if it's supposed to be a romantic gesture of her admiring from afar, etc. Not the end of the world, though, I suppose, since romantic gestures like that fit in pretty well to fanfiction usually.
I like the way Rose is written. She's fiery, and smart, and popular, and also absolutely plagued by pressure and a sense of responsibility that she feels she can never live up to. I like that plotline in nextgen fanfic, because honestly, I like to think the kids had great lives and were very loved, but that they must have all been at least a little fucked up in their own ways. I especially think Scorpius would have a lot of shit to deal with and try to wrap his head around, and I'd have liked to see a little more about his perspective in this story, but that's ok. It's a more Rose-centric story I suppose.
We learn that Rose has some pretty pent up anger toward these people she wrote letters to. Apparently she's been screwed over by a lot of people, and it was a little dramatic honestly - maybe a bit too unrealistic for me. It's a bit coincidental that she's been that hurt by that many members of her family like that. If the topics of the letters had been a little more varied in emotion (instead of mostly anger) then I think I would have liked the story more.
However, I do like the way the characters are revisited later after Rose encounters them again after some time away. I won't give too much plot away, but I appreciated that evolution. The way things went down made me pretty sad - again, I won't go into detail and ruin it - but not every story can have a totally happy ending so I really appreciate that. I like nextgen stories that aren't totally fluffy and wonderful, so that's cool.
Overall, it wasn't my favorite nextgen story but it definitely was different and made me think quite a bit about these nextgen characters that we know so little about. The story wasn't too long and it was a smooth read, so thank you very much for submitting!
