If there’s a constant in the X-Men comics from the 1980s and early 1990s, it’s  Freedom Force being generalized dickholes to everyone. They’ve plagued our mutant heroes, not just in Uncanny X-Men, but also in the pages of X-Factor and the New Mutants. They are always around, and when they show up it always leads to a fight. And for anyone hoping that the deaths of team members Destiny and Avalanche over in Uncanny X-Men #255 would lead these guys to turn a new, more compassionate page, this comic says think again. I call bullshit! He looks nothing like Cyclops. There’s also a lot of shit in here about Cable’s bionic arm, which he’s tinkering around with and fixing. Hmm, just kinda seems like a cyborg arm in these early appearances, and not the techno-organic infection it would later become. It’s almost seems like after Rob Liefeld created the character, the rest of the Marvel creative team was like… “Rob all you did was put pockets on this guy. He needs a story too. Oh nevermind we’ll do it for you.” (New Mutants #88 – Apr 1990)

Hey wait a second, when did they start calling him Silver Sabre. His fucking name is Super Sabre! Jesus look how they drew those old pieces of shit a few years before this. Literally all the New Mutants are horny for evil Moira Mactaggert. And I can’t blame them. Too bad it’s the Shadow King’s perverse sexuality that they are all keying off of, and not the suppressed desires of a mild mannered Scottish scientist come bursting forth in an uncontrollably surge during a mid-life crisis. The only reason I’m posting this old ad from New Mutants #88 is because I went to that Chicago comic-con. It was my first, and to this day, only significant comic book convention experience, besides much smaller shows. Man, that show was amazing. I had never seen so many comic books in one place. I bought my copy of Incredible Hulk #180 at that show for 15 dollars. I also bought Web of Spider-Man #27 and Uncanny X-Men #234. And I can remember my friend Andy also bought a copy of Incredible Hulk #180 but after he bought it he was flipping through it and found that a coupon had been cut out so my dad took it back and strong armed the dealer into giving Andy his money back. Also, there was a super shady table in the corner that was selling VHS Batman porn. Such vivid childhood memories! (New Mutants #88 – Apr 1990)
