The Scary Reality of Being a Leader
The Scary Reality of Being a Leader
What happens when you become the leader?
If you are new to management or supervision you know the scary reality of being a leader. Often times we start out as one of the guys, or girls, on the floor working with everybody. Then one day we get chosen to move into a leadership role and everything changes.
It is difficult making the transition from being part of the group to being the leader of the…

- New Supervisor never refers to the driver of the Mobile clinic by his name to patients or visitors, just "the driver." It sets my teeth on edge every time. - New Supervisor doesn't speak any Spanish... Which is FINE! I get it's hard when you didn't grow up with a language to learn it and feel confident to speak it. But like, he doesn't even try to learn basic phrases which is frustrating when all of our patients today have been Spanish-speaking and (again) he was hired as the head of two health programs for underserved queer and trans folks. It wouldn't even be that bad if I didn't have to be his personal translator and like, he maybe said thank you once in a while because it's work too!
“It’s hard with trans women because they don’t engage in care” –new supervisor (who btw runs a trans health program)
After I went through a barriers-to-healthcare-for-trans-women-101 spiel he then clarified that he *meant* it’s hard at testing events to connect people in general to care when you’re in a community and not in a healthcare setting. Sure it is but then why specify trans women? Seriously dude? Fuck off with that. I’m not here to be all chummy with you and diss my sisters in the process. Maybe if patients are ~non compliant it has more to do with you.
misohead said: oh god this really sounds like me irl (I am super awkward at high-fives/fist bumping etc) except I would probably just laugh and agree to hide the fact I never leave the house, instead of saying NO I WILL STUDY, I try not to be THAT blatantly dull
I PROMISE you are nothing like this guy. He’s not an awkward guy, which I would understand/empathize with (he’s actually really charismatic and extroverted) - the trying-to-shake-a-fist thing is just indicative to me of him being really straight-laced in a way that makes it hard for him to get where people who aren’t like him are coming from (which would be fine if he wasn’t in a position where that was extremely necessary/his whole job? Like he complained about people playing the race card and being “too aggressive” about racism and didn’t get how PoC and trans people wouldn’t trust the healthcare establishment). There’s also a history of him shutting me down.

This was the same guy who didn't know how to fist-bump
New Supervisor: [talking about how he’s going to grad school in a few months] “it’s a shame because [town with one school he was accepted] is a nice college town but [town with school where he’ll be going] doesn’t have anything”
Me: “that’s all right, you can make your own fun.”
NS: “um no, I’ll be studying, that’s what I’m there to do”
dreading work tomorrow
Just in from work, the new supervisor seems cool. He is alright to talk to and doesn't seem to be the bossy, high and mighty sort. To be fair I was only on a 4 hour shift today and he came in an hour and a half before I finished. I only see him for like 2 hours this week so I will have to wait and see.
