New Kobe Bryant Mural by Jonas Never in DTLA.

In the mid-19th century "Washington Street Gang" leader William "Bill the Butcher" Poole joined forces with several other groups and formed New York's most infamous street gang, "The Bowery Boys." In 2002 @Daniel.DayLewis received widespread critical acclaim for his heavily fictionalized portrayal of Bill—renamed William Cutting—in Martin Scorsese's epic “Gangs of New York.” Pioneer muralist Jonas Never is one of LA's most prolific street artists but in the middle of a pandemic Never stayed close to his home in Culver City to paint "Bill the Butcher" for his friends at Culver Blvd Irish Pub @AuldFellaLA — a curious irony since Poole was of English descent and the film pits him against rival Five Points Irish gang, the "Dead Rabbits."  @never1959/

11 years ago today I married wifey aka @la_angelbaby aka @mrsbluequeen1369 !!! We been together 24 and still going strong, grateful for everything, all the stuff we’ve done, places we’ve been and people that have come and gone, and to be alive!!! When someone passes it really makes you think about what’s important and not. LAst night after the services for @nipseyhussle we went to check out the finished mural by @never1959 . Grateful for my life and being able to have done all the things I have done. Had a great 24 years , we’ve been thru a lot in the past 11, but stuck together thru it all. After 80 years of a drugstore sitting at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Parkman Ave., in 2015 Sun Lake Drugs could no longer juggle rising rents, lower insurance reimbursements, and competition from the chains. Jonas Never, aka Never1959, has now done murals for something like 15 different Floyd’s 99 Barbershop locations so when Floyd’s took over the drugstore property Never was one of the first to get a call. After researching the music scene of the neighborhood—and having to make some changes to the art midstream—Never arrived at this composition highlighting a variety of artists connected one way or another to Silver Lake, including Jackson Browne, Beck, and Silversun Pickups (the band named after the liquor store diagonally opposite). Featured front and center however is the late-great Elliott Smith who’s “Figure 8” album cover was photographed in front a mural just a mile up Sunset.  @never1959  @floyds99barbershop  @elli0ttsmith  

The Los Angeles Daily News says Jonas Never, aka Never1959, may not be the city’s best known mural artist but “with a body of work that includes 65 local murals, he might just be the busiest.” With realistic murals, often inspired by the history and culture of the neighborhood and carefully researched through conversations with local residents Never has become a master at recreating the style of the late ‘50s. When Bill O’Brien, co-owner of the Floyd’s 99 barbershop chain, saw one of Never’s period pinup pieces he asked him to do a painting for one of their shops—cementing a relationship that has now seen him do more than a dozen paintings for Floyd’s locations across the country. While some locals have complained that the ‘50s pinups of this piece on Grand View and Venice Blvds. are not politically correct enough for today, its hard to argue the work’s connection to Floyd’s rock and roll poster lined “old-school new-style” aesthetic.  @never1959  @floyds99barbershop
