The autumn-flowering bulb Nerine undulata (wavy nerine) looked great on this rock garden. It grows best with a well-drained soil in a sheltered position with full sun. In warmer locations the bulbs can be planted with the ‘neck’ of the bulb above the soil whilst in colder areas they can be deeper for frost protection.

Nerine sarniensis
Nerine is a genus of bulbs in the Amaryllis Family, and they mostly have pink flowers. Nerine sarniensis is an exception, with flowers that are often vivid red, but may be red-orange, salmon, white or other hues. It comes from the winter-rainfall region in southwestern South Africa, to the east and northeast of Cape Town. The bulbs are dormant during the dry summer months, with the flowers coming in the fall, just before the leaves emerge in time for the winter rainy season.
