My brain:...when people who couldn’t hear speech get cochlear implants for the first time, do they instantly understand speech? As in, do they know which sounds correspond with the letters and written language they’ve learned? If you didn’t know the written ‘a’ sounds like “ah” or “ay”, or that the written word ‘bear’ sounds like “bay-r” , would you automatically connect the two upon hearing it? Is it more difficult to understand accents if you aren’t used to the sound variances of speech? Wow, if only there was a helpful resource where you could look all this up, where people who have lived through this experience have possibly discussed it, or scientists publish studies on it....if only...
