āFor the last ten years, National Collegiate Preparatory PCHS has been anĀ āeducation oasisā in Ward 8 [of Washington DC], providing opportunity and a rigorous academic program to the children and families of an often forgotten and overlooked community. The school has been under siege by the Public Charter School Board (PCSB) for alleged poor performance and recently the PCSB voted unanimously to revoke National Prepās charter at the end of the 2019-20 school year.ā
āBy closing National Prep, the PCSB has left our students without any choice of education and will be forcing our students to attend schools that are performing lower than National Prep. This is unfair and unacceptable to our students and the community of Ward 8. The community is outraged! Parents, students, teachers and community leaders are all coming together to Save Our School. National Prep has become such an important part of the fabric of the neighborhood and provides a safe haven for the students that it serves.

As an alumni of NCP (c/o 2014),Ā I can say that the school is in fact an education oasis. Iāve had the pleasure of being a part of the rigorous International Baccalaureate program, participating in Sankofa Ball (a coming-of-age debutante ball), as well as going out of the country to volunteer and practice my Spanish in the Dominican Republic. The school is small and still young, but I am amazed at how much it has grown since Iāve graduated. There are many activities, sports, and events for the students to be a part of, and the faculty and staff have always supported and cared for the kids and their well-being. Shutting down this school would be a mistake.
