Back in the day, before nautical-looking caps were replaced by the ubiquitous newsies cap, the menu at even the smallest diner or lunch counter was much more extensive and varied than it is today, as can been seen in this photograph of the lunch board from The Jersey Devil diner in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1933.
Just try to order âdog ears,â âcow chunksâ or âfresh hamâ at your local diner and see the looks you get.
FUN FACT: Baby Gruenwald hates it when people mistakenly call a âflat capâ a ânewsies cap,â as there are major style differences between the two. The flat cap is narrower, with one piece comprising the top of the cap. The newsies cap (or newsboy cap) is sewn together from the top and is made of eight âpizza sliceâ panels, and is traditionally finished with a button on the bean.
