So… the name Katniss comes from the Lenape language, an indigenous tribe of the North American woodlands
And (some of) the Lenape tribe lived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, which is apart of Appalachia, and Appalachia is (roughly) where District 12 is located. Plus the culture of the Lenape tribe according to Google is very similar to how Katniss’ father raised her: nomadic trading, hunting etc. Maybe Katniss’ ancestors on her father’s side were apart of the Lenape tribe? I used to think she might be part Cherokee, but now I’m rethinking that.
If THG stage show does happen, then they may at some point license it for local theatres and schools to put on. Which means that at some point, Katniss could be played by every type of girl possible, which is just. Very cool.
I wish I lived in a world where Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs played Katniss, Katniss gets to be Native and Native Americans has a positive representation in film and are not shut out by Hollywood, no whitewashing, and it would have just been great and the movies would have had a more powerful message if Katniss was played by a Native American.
