A Quick NorthFin Nano Bits Review From Someone With A Lot Of Nano Tanks!

Here’s my honest review of NorthFin Nano Bits fish food 🐟

One of the biggest reasons I decided to try NorthFin Nano Bits is because I keep a lot of nano fish, and the packaging claims the pellets are only 0.5 mm in size. That sounded perfect for small species like chili rasboras and other tiny fish that struggle with larger foods.

However, when I opened the container, the pellets immediately looked much larger than expected. After measuring them, most of the pieces were actually around 1 mm or larger, which is roughly double the size that’s advertised.

To show the difference, I compared them with NTLabs Micro Crumb and Hikari Micro Pellets, and the size difference is pretty obvious. These NorthFin pellets are noticeably bigger.

Normally I would also compare them with Fluval Bug Bites Light Blue Formula, which is what I usually feed my nano fish, but I had run out at the time. Even so, based on memory and past use, I’m fairly confident those pellets are smaller than these.

For larger fish, this probably won’t be an issue at all. In fact, my bigger fish eat these pellets without any problems.

But for true nano fish, the size really matters. Many tiny species simply can’t eat pellets this large quickly. This is especially true for top and mid-water swimmers like chili rasboras. When they try to pick at the pellets, the food quickly sinks before they have much chance to eat it.

Looking at the ingredients, though, the formula itself is actually quite good. The main ingredients include black soldier fly larvae, herring meal, and sardine meal, along with extras like spirulina and kelp. The food also lists a 50% protein content, which is on the higher end of what I like to feed but still reasonable for many small fish.

My main concern is accuracy. If the pellet size listed on the packaging isn’t correct — something that’s very easy to measure — it does make me wonder how precise the rest of the labeling is.

I’ve tried a lot of different foods with my Celestial Pearl Danios over the past 18 months, but this is the only one that consistently gets this reaction. I feed my fish daily, so this isn’t a hunger response. They’re well fed and healthy, but they clearly prefer this formula. I’ve tested Fluval Bug Bites, Hikari Micro Pellets, NTLabs Micro Crumb, NTLabs Nano Tropical, NorthFin Nano Bits, and several others. They would eat those foods without hesitation, but they never showed this same excitement or competition over the food.

Another benefit is the pellet size isn’t an issue. Even though CPDs have tiny mouths, they’ll happily bite pieces off and eat them without struggling. The pellets sink quickly, which actually works well because CPDs naturally feed throughout the tank, including from the substrate. They’ll continue picking at it until nothing is left, which helps reduce waste.

The main ingredients include fish meal and krill meal, and judging by their behaviour, it’s clearly something they find highly appealing. It’s also been great for encouraging natural feeding behaviour and keeping them active.
