So itās a wonder anything Iāve put into my tank has survived with my awful āacclimationā process. I donāt have a drip acclimation system, but Iāve essentially been doing it by hand. I just got a few cherry shrimp today knowing the PH they came from is 7.6+ to my 6.8 PH. Iāve been slowly adding water for two hours now and the PH of ther holding tank has barely changed. I donāt know why I didnāt check the water on the other fish I was acclimating, Iām embarrassed now. I want these guys to be as comfy as possible going into my tank. I wasnāt adding nearly enough water to start actively changing the PH. Iāve removed 1/2 of the existing water and Iām tripping what I was adding before to try to get them in before 8pm. Iām a silly person, learning a hobby with loving creatures is endlessly stressful.
Mayaca Fluviatilis
Currently my only stem plant, the Scarlet Temples completely fell apart on me and whole plant melted into nothing. Even the roots rotted out.Ā
The Mayaca seems to be my unkillable plant. I just started propagating it at the new growths that had delicate roots sprouting from the stem. I think I had some melting/die off from having a few pieces too close to the filter and the tank transfer (I emergency moved from a 6 to a 10 once I realized the Pygmy Corys and the Chili Rasboras were not cohabitating well in too small of a tank), so Iām trying to see if the leaves grow back and/or if I can replace the burnt looking stems with entirely new plants. I have a piece that I trimmed floating at the top to see if this kind of plant will sprout roots floating in water.Ā

Lockdown paved the way for many of us to spend an ungodly amount of time researching something previously non-existent in and unessential to our lives. Closed eco-spheres and fancy goldfish are the gateway drugs of this story.Ā
I had fish growing up, but I think the tank was gone before high school. My father liked to keep all sorts of critters without any real regard for their needs or quality of life. Iām quite surprised anything I kept ever lived considering he passed on that blasĆ©, careless style of fish keeping and animal care to young me. As a fisherman himself, and someone who frequently missed out on emotional growth opportunities and failed trials of judgement due to pharmaceutical malpractice, animal lives didnāt mean much to him. The most consistent recurring dream I have (or had, as it seems) is ārememberingā after apparent weeks of having forgotten, that I have fish and a fish room. Half empty, murky tanks with fish that haven't been fed in ages. Yet they are all alive, always. I panic and clean and feed and add water and everything is back to normal, but animals go weeks without care in my dreams and Iām not sure why this is. Lingering guilt of being unable to take care of creatures while youāre too sick to care for yourself is my guess.Ā
Obvious and relevant psychological distress aside, I spent weeks in quarantine consuming endless fish content. A betta tank was the initial intention, just something little with frilly dragon decorations. A fully planted, naturally scaped 10 gallon tank later (with a quarantine tank in progress) I went a little off track. So here is what Iām rocking now.
Plants: -Mayaca fluviatilis which is growing SO WELL for me.Ā
-Marimo moss balls
-Monte Carlo that I still do not know how to plant properly, yes I know they look like weird little bushes but they pearl for me so they are at least surviving !?!
-Anubias Nana Petite that is just chillinā in the flow because I initially tied it to the largest piece of driftwood as the white bacterial slime started engulfing it, and the slime rotted out the roots. Iāll tie it to something eventually but itās sprouting new leaves being untethered so Iām letting little dude do its thing.Ā
-Java Moss newly tied to a rock that was also rotting on white slime driftwood initially.Ā
Red root floaters & Salvinia Cucullata suffering from too much flow and no protective barrier from it hehe. The Fogbit is doing well, though.Ā
The tank is stocked with corydoras pygmaeus, amano shrimp, nerite snails, and boraras brigittae. Next post Iāll go into the journey that adding fish was, and screwing up the nitrogen cycle with the shimpā¦Ā
Unlike past fish keeping as I was taught, I am obsessed and devoted to my emotional support tank. Iām very proud of myself for being able to take care of such a diverse variety of life, regardless of the setbacks from real time learning.Ā
