Walking in on the Nagoya Basho
While I saw Tokyo's sumo arena out of sumo season, I stumbled on an active sumo tournament last summer. July is the month of the Nagoya Basho, and the flags of the various participating sekitori (officially ranked wrestlers, all the names on the flags ending with the character zeki, ι’) welcomed not only the spectators, but also the visitors to Nagoya Castle. That's quite the entrance!

why did they roll that one injured guy like that off of the dohyo .
Man, Meisei is really pushing through too many injuries this basho. I know he's a big name for Tatsunami Beya and with Hoshoryu's withdrawal on day 5 there's gotta be extra pressure to perform, but dude is is gonna destroy his body if he keeps going like this.
There's some truly inspired sumo on display from the rank and filers in Nagoya, though, with a handful of maegashira absolutely demolishing their opponents. I fully expect Aonishiki to make it to komosubi by the Kyushu Basho in November. Kusano and Fujinokawa are kicking ass and taking names, so I doubt either of them will stay at maegashira 14 for long. Fujinokawa's tsuridashi victory on day 5 was unbelievable, and he may prove to be just as dynamic a rikishi as Ura in the long run. Speaking of my absolute fave, the man in the pink mawashi is doing pretty fucking well for himself in Nagoya, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a kachi-koshi for him!
And Asakoryu looks like he put on a few kilos of solid muscle all over his body for July. The dude was already built like a granite column to begin with but now his physique looks like he'd be able to do highland and strongman competitions at a pro level as well as sumo.
