NOTES : Hello!! This was originally coâwritten in a roleplay with petrathefighter over on Discord for our Regiscout! Spear wrote Pacifica and I wrote Gideon; I did change up a lot of Pacifica's lines as to not directly plagiarize! Maybe I'll expand upon this AU one day if the people want it! -đš
It was too quiet in the Research Corner.
Long since had the rest of its earlier inhabitants exited, all with their own responsibilities. Of course, this left Pacifica to her thoughts, simultaneously yearning to be alone whilst also wanting to engage with the roomâs only other occupant.
If youâd asked Pacifica maybe a year ago, she would refuse to even look at Gideon Gleeful, much less talk to him. The kid was a magnet for trouble, weaving everyone around his sinister finger. His little act was almost as unnatural as the white color of his hair.
She supposed it was only different now that they were united by the same awful circumstances. After all, it was rather difficult to maintain a grudge with someone you were constantly forced to march alongside. Heâd also been different since Weirdmageddon - less creepy. Wise in a way that spoke beyond his years - even if he was still annoying.
He was staring at her now. Not in the manner she would have considered unsettling before, that she recognized. He was curious. Worried, almost.
But old habits died hard. Pacifica didnât take well to being stared at. (Unless it was in adoration, of course. But she could tell - and was thankful for the fact - that Gideon didn't seem to swing that way.) She needed to say something, anything.
Her mouth spoke before her head could. âIs it bad to miss someone youâre in a complicated relationship withâŚ?â She suddenly muttered, wringing her hands and trying to square her shoulders.
Gideon seemed to consider this for a long moment. He was genuinely processing what she had said and pausing to respond accordingly. âI donât think so,â he replied simply, giving her an almost knowing look. Like he could tell who had captured her attention just by watching her. Pacifica didnât like that look.
âUgh! Iâm hopeless.â She sighed, stuffing her head between her hands. Feelings really were the worst sometimes.
Gideon just frowned. âThe way I see it, you kinda come off as the opposite of âbadâ,â he offered, shrugging his shoulders.
Now it was Pacificaâs turn to do a double-take. â...What do you mean?â She ventured, peeking out from between her fingers.
âIt just shows that âya care. Not lotsâa people have that much goinâ on for âem.â Gideon paused to stare down at the floor. âCaring may not always feel good, but it is good, yâknow?â
She stared in slight unease. Just when did this kid - younger than her, even - get so intelligent?
He seemed to take her silence as a means to continue. Reiterate, even. âWhat I mean is, think about it. If Mabel was up and givinâ herself grief for feelinâ the same way you do, wouldnât you try to get her to see it the way I do?â
Pacifica blinked, trying to ignore the blush that crept up her cheeks. â...Yeah. I would.â She couldnât deny it was true, though she hated the logical take. She crossed her arms and turned away a little. âYouâreâŚinfuriatingly smart,â she grumbled.
The words seemed to cause something in Gideonâs expression to shift. âI don't think Iâm smart, per se; I just know how to sound intelligent. Workinâ as a child star âll do that to âya.â He gave a casual shrug of his shoulders. âBut the point is, I'm right for a reason, ainât I? You really shouldnât be goinâ and givinâ yourself a hard time over these things - especially if youâd support anyone else goinâ through the same.â
Heâs out-witting me. Pacifica tried to ignore the surge of annoyance that often came from confrontation. âYou just know I have a soft spot,â she huffed, shaking her head. âHow do you read people so well, anyway? Itâs kind of creepy. Not that it creeps me out, though.â She felt the need to clarify that part. Nothing scared Pacifica Northwest.
âI dunno. Maybe I ain't psychic no more, but those there kindsâa things tend to stick with you for a while,â Gideon suggested. âIn fact, when I first got that old Amulet, I think I was too tuned into everyoneâs feelinsâ. They were so loud, so angry - like one of âem hot, swelterinâ forest fires.â The memory seemed to stir something up in him, but he quickly pushed it down. âAnyway, you learn to tune âem out eventually; but part of âem stays, just as everythinâ does. Everyone elseâs emotions become a part âa âya.â
Pacifica could only stare for a good minute. She just couldnât get a reading on him. He seemed so different. âIâŚguess it makes more sense than it should,â she conceded.
But something came to her. âWait a minute. Just how did you know I had a soft spot for Mabel?!â
Gideon seemed to be trying to hide his amusement. âEhâŚpsychic?â He offered bashfully.
After receiving a glare, he elaborated. âCâmon, anyone with a pair âa eyes can tell, Pacifica. The way you fret over her every move doesnât help âyer case, either. ButâŚâ His eyes narrowed into something contemplative, but still amused and good-natured. âI do believe it may be mutual. That girl is just head-over-heels crazy for âya.â
Pacifica stuttered, suddenly regretting this. She turned away in a vain attempt to hide her blushing face. âMabel canât like someone like me. Sheâs so, wellâŚPure. And Iâm a Northwest!â Her voice is a bit higher than before. âYouâre overanalyzing things.â
âMaybe I am. Or maybe youâre under-analyzinâ things.â Gideon phrased it as a mere suggestion as opposed to a statement. âJust think about it a âlil bit, wonât ya? Somethinâ tells me sheâs gonna be waitinâ on you to make the first move.â
Pacifica felt her cheeks burn a bit hotter as she peeked over at him. âWhat are you, some kind of love expert?â
To her surprise, Gideon actually laughed - a bittersweet sound more than anything. âNah, not really. But a broken heartâs perspective is better than none, I do say.â
His gaze softened into something more sincere and encouraging as he offered her a thumbs-up. âGo for it, Pacifica.â
The words were oddly supportive - just what she needed to hear, though she would never admit that. âNext time I see her, I'll tell her. But if this ruins my friendship with her, I wonât be very happy.â
Gideon took the threat with surprising grace. Seriously, could this guy stop throwing her off her groove? âAâcourse. If it all goes to pot, go and throw me under the bus for it. Say it was my idea anâ allâat. I donât mind.â
The offer, while unnecessary, was a sentiment Pacifica found herself appreciating more than she thought she would. âYou know,â she started, changing the topic, âitâs actually kind of nice being around you now, Gideon.â
A pause. That same odd shift from before appeared on his face. He was quiet for several long seconds, staring as if holding something back, before nodding eventually. âItâs real nice talkinâ with you, too,â he said, his voice carrying an undertone of something Pacifica couldnât quite place. âYouâre truly a pleasant person. I mean it.â
The longer the eventual silence stretched for, the more Pacifica found herself passively curious. He seemed to know what she needed to hear before she did. Maybe their similar upbringings led to the same unacknowledged desires; maybe Gideon was just more in-touch with that emotional aspect.
One thing was for sure: his words left her with a lot to think about.
