I remember it was 12.32am and i dully stared at the ugly, white ceiling lights anticipating my roommate’s return from her night out. I waited  2 hours for her and then surprised myself by crying while sitting curled up, head flat against the blanket from home. Surprised; because god knows the last time i cried.
the next day, my roommate suggested for us to decorate the place which helped a lot!Â

I remember it was only 7.00 pm after a good asian meal near the dorms, where i discovered my running fever. My roommate stood with me at the city centre for 20 minutes in the brutal weather because “ the cold will make my feverish body feel better and harder.”
i did feel better afterwardsÂ
she also added that i was “too soft for the city and to be alone.”Â
I remember making zero observations about her at all but it is always important to, because this is not home home and it is not safe.Â
the difficulty right now, is that i cannot disengage myself from conversations or from life routine. I have to do my laundry, meet people- the logistics and i like it because these are things i can  have control of; at the moment and it is what independence means to me, right now.Â
I think the idea of being independent in Singapore is just different, neither better nor worse and incomparable. I just have to focus on building a life worth living here and that is good enough.Â
