Will’s hand shakes slightly and the origami heart rattles. He carefully pulls apart the folds. Nestled inside is a small, empty chrysalis. He hears Hannibal’s voice.
I could never predict you.
Will you forgive me?
Will gently folds the heart back up, knowing how Hannibal’s hands moved over the creases, the way he had carefully secreted the fragile husk inside the heart. As he smoothes the last fold his own heart leaps, feeling a phantom touch.
Hannibal said he could never predict Will. And at this moment, Will realizes that Hannibal was right.
He tucks the heart away.
