It’s a shame that physicians have to carry oppressive malpractice insurance and can be sued for the very appearance of wrongdoing, but LEOs are immune from almost any consequences while acting in their “official” capacity. Reformation in policing must begin with a reexamination of immunity- there’s just far too much power in such a state, and as we know power tends to corrupt to the degree that it goes unchecked.

After we begin checking some of this power, we can begin to reform national standards concerning CQDT, arrest and hold techniques and methods generally, alongside reevaluating psychological preparedness (and standards for ongoing examination and support), alongside developing more effective means of empathy and bias training.

And regarding law enforcement and official capacity immunity, I’m reminded of the Koan “Hyakujo’s Fox” (Case #2 of the Mumonkan). Anytime we come to think or act as though we exist outside of the laws of cause and effect (karma) we become notorious tricksters (foxes) bound to suffer the consequences (thinking of riots and such) of our errant thinking and behavior until we can come to our senses, confess, and finally bury our fox bodies.
