“Takeyama,” Eraser’s voice cuts through her thoughts. She turns her attention to him instantly, if only because she hadn’t expected him to actually talk to her, since he’s known mostly for his dislike of talking to anyone. “They’re you’re friends, yes?” Yuu nods. “Then trust they will tell you if there are any issues you should be informed of.”

Takeyama is quiet for a while. Shinji assumes he’s being too mean, and is about to just drop it, when she speaks up again. “Let them, then.”

“…What.”

“Let them think there’s some juicy gossip to uncover!” A wide smile crosses Takeyama’s face, one that Shinji knows all too well, and he refrains from banging his head into the steering wheel. “The more attention on me, the higher my ranking! Especially for something so scandalous like this!”

“People are going to think we’re dating!”

“Yeah. Do you think that’ll ruin my reputation?”

Shinji kisses her jaw, and then retreats inside. She almost calls out, asking for him to stay, but she doesn’t want to sound desperate, and he likely took her curt responses as a request to be left alone. It was a correct assumption, but now that Yuu is by herself again, she realizes that wasn’t what she wanted at all. She can’t stand the thought of being around anyone, but the loneliness seeping into her is only dredging up a hopelessness from the pit of her stomach, asking her what the point in any of this is if she’ll be haunted by the war forever. They won in the end, but most days, it doesn’t feel like it’s over at all.
