Riddle Master Sphinx Sketches- I normally start off with dozens of thumbnails in a physical sketchbook, these are not pretty looking mostly I am thinking in shapes, negative space, composition and framing. I then scan them in and start to block values to get the mood/ tone down I’m going for. Once I finish these I add color with a color layer in Photoshop and begin to paint directly on one layer so my colors can mix/vibrate, this is important because it helps me evaluate the final color temperatures. 🎨🎨🎨 . Slide two- during the whole process I am collecting reference from all sorts of places online, to help inspire me or inform rendering quality at the end. The middle image ( The Enigma, by Gustave Dore) I fell in love with when I saw it in person at the Musee D’Orsay in Paris, love the emotion of the scene!! Some references are just to inspire costume or lighting in the scene. The goal is not to copy, but take visual notes that inform the final. ✨🤔 Thanks for checking out this post!
