How's this for a pitch:

Set a mere decade after Prince Asriel carried his brother's corpse down the mountain. The village they encountered, the same Chara ran away from, had the unfortunate distinction of being a fringe cult compound descended from the magi that sealed monsterkind away — sort of like Mormon Jonestown. The cult used their newfound "proof" to establish a social stranglehold on the small towns at the foot of Mt. Ebott, which has turned into a terror campaign of guerilla warfare.

Seth and Aqua are children of this compound who run away from home. Seth sees the writing on the wall — if their community comes to blows with federal law enforcement, it'll be a bloodbath (see also: the IRL Waco siege).

There is a way to resolve this peacefully. All Seth needs is proof. Proof that there is evil under the mountain.

The two children are in for a fair bit of culture shock on that front. Aqua, ever impressionable, is shaped by Seth's choices but never loses her whimsy.

Best case scenario: Seth and Aqua smuggle a garbled message through the Barrier at the cost of their lives. Their message — their dreams — are witnessed and inspire other human children to flee from the chaos up the mountain. Within Mt. Ebott there is refuge and doom and hope and knowledge and damnation and a kind old goat, and a million other things. Maybe, just maybe, monsterkind will emerge one day from the Underground to witness the sun rise over a kinder world.

Worst case scenario: The CORE fucking explodes, shattering the Barrier and killing all life above and below in a sixteen-mile radius.
