Flamingos get their magnificent coloration from the foods they eat. The brine shrimp and blue-green algae that they filter out with their beaks contains beta carotene, which is taken up in the liver and used to color their feathers. Interestingly, they filter these foods upside down, so the bottom part of their jaw is on top while feeding. This gives them their distinctive beak shape. Even more interestingly, both moms and dads “nurse” their chicks with a type of crop milk, which is high in fats and proteins. Like in mammals, the milk production is stimulated by the hormone prolactin. Glands in the throat (crop) produce the milk, which is then regurgitated to the young.
