Reposting this art from @bedupolker cause I'm finally getting writing done
Where... did we come from?
Itβs a rather simple question, from the Nest of course.
But then the pups always ask βBut where did Nest come from? And all the other things we can see from the windows.β And eventually, the hardest of all, βBut why are we here? And where are the Giants?β
The stories of the Three provide very few answers.
Of them, Rio spoke the most of the early days. Of gleaming while walls and silver bars. Of when the great apertures were filled with glass instead of mere fragments, worn dull and smooth by wind and rain, of seemingly endless labyrinths and far strange confines.
Of the Giants, all alike in dress, but all different in the face, peering down, seemingly always watching, murmuring things that sounded almost like words when she strained. Those days were cloudy, fog-like, ever for her, the first to speak.
Well is it remembered what she claimed as her first true memory, sharp and clear.
The sky, on fire. The Nest, shaking. Things crashing to the ground. The Giants, fearful?
That was the last time we saw them. We never had the chance to ask them why.
Rio, joined by Gap and Kul crept from where theyβd been hiding in the walls for many a day, freed their Kin, and set about teaching them to live.
Things were good back in those early days. Whatever strange devastation had plagued the Giants left the Nest mostly intact. Though at first, the stories say, there was great fear that the Kin would starve to death, bereft of the Giants, a fear that was soon dispelled as ways of traversing the Nest were discovered.
Food, seemingly unending! Carefully packed away by the Giants. Water, cold and clean, from the strange pipes that ran through their walls. The Nest was not built for our use, any newborn can look up at the titanic walls and see that. So the good years were spent adapting this new involvement. Learning to climb, to manipulate, and eventually, to build.
The Good Years did not end all at once, but slowly. The Three passed on, the food buckets emptied, perhaps the worst was discovering the end of the water, great tanks now dry, with that found elsewhere often being... tainted.
The windows, which had once seemed so solid, smashed by mere stones and wood, thus did the Elements enter the Nest. More and more holes were opened, beyond the ability of any of the Kin to patch, thus did the Others enter the Nest. One day a great shaking opened rifts below, flooding where many useful things had once been stored, that is how the Damp Growths entered the Nest.
We are tied to the Nest, but we could not remain entirely within its walls. It is only out there, beyond the ancient and rusting gates that we can find the food to feed our kin, the clean water to slake our thirst, and perhaps the knowledge to defend our home.
We have already lost so many, to privation, to predators, to things so strange we yet cannot name them. Nevertheless, our young venture further and further with each season, building a map of the world.
They scramble, they hide, they fight, and they die
Yeah, for the three people that might care, I'm finally doing more than just making notes and brainstorming mechanics, I'm attempting to put actual prose (and technical writing) to page
Anyway, this is just V0.1 of the Players Guide introduction, I wonder what it puts you in mind of, does it make you want to play a game? What kind?
