Wrong Side of the Law
💜 For @motleysort ‘s Misha! 💜
"If you’re looking for a job, you’re in the wrong place.” Rayn didn’t bother looking up from the newspaper she was idly flipping through with her morning serving of hot green tea. “We don’t work with cops.” That last syllable dripped out with so much venom. Like it pained her to say. Pig rolled off the tongue so much easier. “Last time I tried to get things done by the book, I got tied up in so much red tape I couldn’t tell my head from my ass and the culprit spent another three years out of jail with another ten victims to add to his body count. Even years later after I’ve resigned, I still get dead rats in my mailbox and graffiti on my windows from my old buddies at the station for trying to do the right thing. And the other local stations didn’t bother answering my backup calls either. Cops are the same everywhere.”
Finally, her gaze rose from the inkprint lettering on her current page. “Why in the hell should I think otherwise about you?” Ocean blue eyes glared daggers at Misha from beneath a furrowed brow. Business was slow and cases were dwindling in terms of leads. But she wasn’t so desperate as to take the help of a cop. Not yet at least. She still had some dignity. Integrity? Well, that was up for debate with her vigilante side-gig but... her dignity was still intact. She wouldn’t drag that part of herself through the mud just yet. “Unless you’re here to join up as a PI or another guard for the witnesses, I suggest you get going, chuleta. The Krispy Kreme‘s just around the corner.” She couldn’t help but smirk a bit as she let that last little comment slip out.
