(1/2) Honestly ~as a survivor~ or whatever I find it deeply upsetting to see a ton of people act like carrying a lethal weapon around is the ONLY way to not get raped, not to mention the weird turn this discussion has taken ("how can I keep myself from getting raped if I can't do martial arts?" etc) is a pretty big indicator that this line of thinking is fundamentally victim-blaming. It's a quick jump from "guns will protect women!" to "well, she should have had a gun, what did she expect?"
(2/2) I think the thing that a lot of people don't want to face up to is the fact that people don't get raped because they didn't have a gun, or because they didn't take self-defense classes, or because their skirt was too short. Self-defense tactics can be empowering and make you feel safer, which is great, but if you start insisting that victims and potential victims can stop rape by acting a certain way, you're victim-blaming.
