NAS is just short for Network Area Storage, aka a Network Drive. Me and my husband just had an external harddrive that was connected to the router that we could access on any of our devices in case we wanted to watch a movie or something. it also doubled as a backup for certain things, namely my husband’s work files.

The software we used to recover everything successfully is called EaseUS Data Recovery. We tried other programs, but unfortunately none of them worked (at least none that worked the way we wanted it to.) It cost us $70. The only things I dislike about the program is that depending on how your HDD shit the bed it may not recover absolutely everything, and it not only renames all the files, but also organizes them into really random ass folders depending on a lot of variables, including whether or not certain pictures of EXIF data (in which case it’ll organize it by what kind of camera or scanner was used to get the picture.)

That said there do exist free data recovery tools that might work for you better than it did for me. Recuva is a popular one (There’s a pro version that’s like $25, going for $20 right now,) and TestDisk was the program we initially tried to use (but is still good even if it couldn’t get what we wanted.)

Beyond that though... once you recover everything, back it up in at least two places, one of which being outside of your house in case shit hits the fan. I think there’s a cloud backup service for $5/month that we’re considering using to keep this sort of thing from happening again.
