As a striking example of Victorian neo-Gothic architecture, the building's style was strongly influenced by the ideas of 19th-century art critic John Ruskin. Visiting the insects at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History!
I went to Oxford to meet the Head of Collections at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and the Head of Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera Collections. I wanted to talk about the Wildlife Recording project I run in West Wales, and to hear more about their techniques for identifying tricky taxonomic groups.
The staff have given me some fantastic identification materials that I will share with the participants on the Nature of our Village Project and I have promised to explore a new area: Dung Beetles! Darren Mann runs the National Recording Scheme for this group, and noted that Ceredigion is a “black hole for data”, so there is definitely some work to be done!
I am very grateful to the staff for our meeting, and the chance to go back stage at the Museum of Natural History was a privilege. The pinned insect collections are a superb resource for identification and show a depth of scholarship that was deeply impressive. I look forward to my first Dung Beetle Hunt!
