Three days before I left for St. John, I headed back to my old stomping grounds. I graduated from Oysterponds Elementary School with a whopping 12 kids in my class and not much has changed today. In fact, the class sizes are so small they combine the fifth and sixth grade for a lot of the subjects now. Walking back into the school brought back two immediate memories. The first was getting in trouble daily for climbing the walls of the bathroom stalls (not sure why this was such a cool thing to do, but I did it a lot, and I almost always got caught). And the second was the day after winter break.  All of our classmates would assemble into the room and the kids who had gone on vacation would get to sit in front of the class and talk about their trip. The coolest trip was always Disney World. Everyone would raise their hand and ask what rides the lucky kids went on or if they visited this place or that place. I would sit in the back of the class and sulk. Don’t get me wrong, my childhood was pretty wonderful and my family was the best, but they were not a Disney family. So while I begged and begged for us to go there, it never happened. HOWEVER, as fate would have it, the week before I walked back into my elementary school, I was in Orlando. Subaru had flown me there to chat up More Good, and the night after my talk they rented out Harry Potter World and we got to ride all the rides with no lines and as many times as we wanted. In the last five minutes chatting with the kids the other day, one of them raised their hand and asked me if I had ever been to Disney World. I shouted back in an overwhelmingly excited tone, “YES!” and then told them all about the rides and places I had gone there. I have been giving my kids @childlifeessentials products for a long time. The very word that could define the More Good Road Trip? While I was in Alaska I was introduced to this word by the youngest Kilcher sister, Catkin. A very sweet and adventurous soul that I instantly loved. She explained to me that growing up she and her sisters would use this word to summarize a day in their life on the homestead where work was 99% of the lifestyle. “It’s how we made it fun,” she told me. Catkin and I had spent a good two hours riding around the property the day I met her before we stumbled upon some moose. I had yet to see any since arriving to Alaska and was extremely excited. A moment later Catkin’s brother Atz was driving by in his truck. He pulled over next to us and got out to see the moose with us. Unbeknownst to me, Catkin grabbed this shot of us casually chatting with some moose in the background. A few minutes later as he turned to go Catkin walked over and gave him a huge hug. He looked at her before he turned around and, very sincerely, asked her, “How are you doing?” She smiled. Hugged him again and off we went. After spending two hours up to that point with her, I knew how much that simple question would mean to her. That was confirmed when she reminisced on the moment a mere hour later with a tear in her eye. For me, being brave that week was staying alone in a cabin in the woods (you know, with the bears!) but maybe being brave for some of us is simply asking the little questions to the people around us. Like, genuinely asking them. #MOREGOOD in the news!! I think some of my favorite things on this journey have been the little surprises each state has offered. Like making a wrong turn in snowy South Dakota and bumping into a ... camel? Or the 13 hours of driving through Idaho with limited cell service and a broken radio bringing me unexpected peace. Or falling in love with a town in Mississippi. Or actually falling in love in a mud hut in Texas in 2017. Three years later and SO many more of these surprising things I can’t wait to tell you about in the follow up book to More Good. But today I want to tell you about the time I got to Alaska and expected to see a lot of white ❄️ and was pleasantly surprised with a lot of yellow 🍂 instead! Because yellow is my favorite color. Last Friday night my amazing Italian hosts (#143!) invited some people from their life over for dinner. Every single one of them was wonderful but these three tugged at my heart, big time. So much so that I drove to go see them again the following night. Lyla, Jade, and Eva lost their mom this past January to a drug overdose. Their grandmother (who is made of half gold, half steel) had adopted them a few years prior since their life with their parents was not a safe environment and they had already been exposed to a lot of things children should not see. One thing that helped the girls was a program at their school called “Kacie’s Cause." The program is centered around drug awareness and provides many things - one of which is licensed therapists who come into some of the schools and talk to the children who sign up for this service. "But a lot of kids don’t understand what it is,” Lyla, the oldest sister, told me. "It’s just a paper that goes around and they don’t really get what it is so they don't know to sign up if they need it. “So we asked the school if we could share our story in hopes it could help the other kids to know this might help them too."
