Movie Time
While I am disappointed in that none of you, my tumblr people, have replied to my asking you to recommend for me fun cosmic horror/similar movies, my sister continues to come through. Watched Zygote on youtube- lots of really great worldbuilding for a 20 minute movie and a fantastic monster. Also watched Monster Factory for the first time, starting with the Final Pam. If youâd told me that I would genuinely enjoy watching any sort of letâs play much less one thatâs like an hour and a half long, Iâd have assumed you were a lying sack of shit, but here we are.
My reviews of the movies Iâve watched in the past couple days:
Hellraiser 2: A+.Â
Itâs what I wanted in a Hellraiser movie all along. Excellent use of themes, worldbuilding, aesthetics, and all around a tightly made movie. Fantastic use of practical effects and makeup. The skinless makeup in particular is just delightfully revolting in the best possible way. Bonus points for making the horror in the psychiatric institute be the psychiatrist, not the patients. Great villainous performances, just nuanced enough. Love, love, love how it goes deeper into its mythology. Fantastic stuff.
Zygote:Â A+, A.
For what it is (a 20 minute film) Iâm giving it an A+. Nothingâs wasted; itâs like a good short story. For what I wish it was (a 90 minute to two hour film) Iâm giving it an A. I would absolutely plunk down ten bux to see a full movie of this. Oh, well. Bonus points for an awesome creature design thrillingly reminiscent of The Thing and a shoggoth from At the Mountains of Madness.Â
The Final Pam: A
I laughed so much it caused me physical pain. Pam, Who Death Forgot, is a cosmic horror unto herself. Good stuff.
Event Horizon: A-.Â
Would benefit from more clear worldbuilding and a more gradual slide for Dr. Weir instead of âIâm evil now.â CGI is really dated but practical effects hold up. Underuses Jason Isaacs. Uses Sam Neil about as well as In the Mouth of Madness did, so, pretty well. Bonus points for good use of Fishbourne, giving him enough depth to be interesting but still letting him be a stoic badass who says rude words a lot.
The Void: B.Â
For a micro-budget Canadian indie film, itâs really great. Atmospheric, creepy, and gross-out body horror done well with practical effects. Could use more worldbuilding, particularly with the cultist angle. They were just sort of a macguffin preventing escape, which was unfortunate. The underlying mythology of it seemed a lot more solid, and Iâd like to have seen more focus on that accordingly, but sort of the whole point was that it was Unknowable and I get that so I didnât mark it down for that- only for the throwaway cultists and opaque motivations (especially for women).Â
just came back from Wonder Woman
Wow.
