*    THEY’RE  MONSTERS  TO  THE  CORE,      their  DNA  tinged  with  the  disgusting  reality  of  what  their  people  truly  were.    some  nights   -   most  nights   -   romana  is  trapped  in  constant  awakeness  by  how  her  skin  itches  with  the  knowledge  she’d  give  anything  to  forget.   so  many  missing  memories,    how  bad  must  they  have  been  if  this  is  the  kind  of  truth  that  her  mind  didn’t  find  itself  compelled  to  push  aside?    by  the  stars  she  wishes  she  didn’t  know,  wishes  that  she  could  choose  to  go  her  days  without  this  added  weight.    enough.   enough  is  enough  and  she’s  overwhelmed  with  the  very  struggle  of  existing.     ❝  I  don’t  disagree.  ❞    it’s  the  most  she  can   -   will  -   comment.   uncharacteristically  quiet  as  she  resumes  her  looking  around  the  room,    hiding  herself  in  plain  sight.   ❝   but  we  all  need  someone  to  blame,    it’s  a  vital  part  of  grieving.  I’m  told.  ❞

❝  I  hope  the  piece  of  home  brings  you  some  comfort.    I  would...   appreciate  it,    if  you  weren’t  to  mention  to  the  doctor  my  location.    for  a  while.    my  TARDIS  still  needs  repairs  and  I’m  not  ready  for  that  specific  reunion.  ❞    for  a  moment,    just  a  moment,   there’s  something  akin  to  vulnerability  in  her  tone.   keeping  her  face  out  of  sight  as  she  bows  her  head  over  the  controls,   curls  shielding  her  from  the  other’s  gaze.   ❝  we  both  know  I’m  not  harming  anyone.    just  writing  up  salvaged  literature  in  my  little  corner  of  the  galaxy.  ❞

* SHE  SHOULDN’T  LAUGH,      but  there’s  plenty  she  shouldn’t  do  that  she  does.   even  existing  goes  against  everything  that  she  should  do,    romana  raising  an  eyebrow  without  needing  to  look  up.     her  chuckle  is  dry,    catching  and  scratching  the  inside  of  her  throat  but  progress  all  the  same,    the  closest  to  genuine  humour  she  knows  how  to  get.    ❝  I’m  an  absolute  delight,    your  eyes  should  be  happy.  ❞    the  remark  is  as  dry  as  her  chuckle,   turning  the  page  of  her  book  sooner  than  any  human  would  ever  be  able  to  process  the  paragraphs  of  tiny  text  before  her.    ❝  please  tell  me  you  brought  me  salty  snacks.    if  you  want  me  to  be  pleasant,    we  both  know  by  now  only  food  can  counter  the  sharper  edges  of  my  personality.  ❞     personality.    trauma.    the  line  between  the  two  has  faded  out  of  existence,   merging  them  into  an  ocean  of  red  and  regret.    it’s  easier  to  pretend  she  knows  where  they  separate  though,    to  blame  her  fiery  presence  on  personality  rather  than  experience.
