This is the comically posh Count Sribor-Rylski, a member of the British colony in Singapore circa 1940s seemingly telling us off for wearing monocles incorrectly.

The monocle began life in the eighteenth century as a perfectly sensible optical instrument and ended it as shorthand for a man who takes himself entirely too seriously. Early versions were used by antiquarians and art dealers, including the Prussian collector Philipp von Stosch, who reportedly employed one in Rome during the 1720s to inspect engraved gems.

By the 1790s, dandies were flourishing handled “quizzing glasses” at assemblies and theatres, peering through them with an expression suggesting that the entire room had been submitted for their approval and found slightly wanting.

During the nineteenth century, the handle disappeared and the lens migrated into the eye socket, where it remained through a combination of facial tension, careful fitting and sheer social determination. The monocle became particularly popular among aristocrats, diplomats and military officers in continental Europe, although some lenses contained no prescription at all. They corrected social standing rather better than eyesight. By the early twentieth century, however, the device had accumulated so much symbolic baggage that wearing one practically announced the possession of a title, a private income and an opinion about the lower orders. Ordinary spectacles were more comfortable, more useful and considerably less likely to fall into the consommé. The monocle gradually retreated from daily life into caricature, costume and cinema, where it survives as one of history’s most economical character descriptions: a small circle of glass capable of making almost anyone completely insufferable.
