Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch #4 (Image Comics, June 2025) cover by Juni Ba
One of my favorite things in both Monkey Meat (2022) and Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch, both by Juni Ba, is the use of symbols/images in place of full dialogue. Very different from what I’ve read before, but very fun!
[PREVIEW] Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch #1 (March 5, 2025)
writer, artist, letterer and cover artist: Juni Ba | publishing company(s): Image Comics and Monkey Meat Multinational
synopsis: Written and drawn by Juni Ba with special authorization from the Monkey Meat Company, the tasty critically acclaimed anthology is back for a second serving!
It’s been established that the Monkey Meat Company, famous for their processed goods, has funded wacky experiments on Monkey Meat Island, turning the once native island full of magical creatures into a hyper-capitalist hellscape where even demons have to pay rent.
And now summer is transforming it into the ideal escape. Going on vacation this year? How about coming to a hellish west African fantasy island run by a corporation selling cans of monkey meat? Embark for a brand new set of adventures to amuse (and mentally scar) the whole family! Exotic locations, debt-collecting forest witches and a superhero monkey suing the corporation that owns him. All these and more await our guests.
Award-winning cartoonist Juni Ba (The Boy Wonder, Djeliya) is returning to his dark fantasy anthology series Monkey Meat to produce more morsels of humor and horror for a new five-issue arc. Enjoy our summer vacation format with summer magazine, two tales, games, and double the traum… huh, excitement!

Alas, Juni Ba has done it again
Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch is really cool y'all. The art is, as always, a standout. The monochrome + fierce reds/oranges/yellows is such a cool vibe that really adds to the incredibly impressive level of detail Ba is drawing with in certain panels. Not-Bruce and Not-Jason are really fun characters, especially with the added context of Ba having done a mini for Batman characters in the past (the 'eating pussy' mention lmao). The 'ads' also give the issue such a bite to it.
Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch #1 arrives this week. See what else is coming to a comic shop near you this Wednesday!
