One of my favorite things in both Monkey Meat (2022) and Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch, both by Juni Ba, is the use of symbols/images in place of full dialogue. Very different from what I’ve read before, but very fun!

Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch starts off so strong with a story focused on the Monkey Meat Company’s own comic superheroes, Monkeagle and Monkey-Girl~
And what is their story, you may ask? Well, their amazing fans decided to use magic to bring them, the comic book characters, to real life, filling their heads with the memories of every iteration of their characters that existed — and, of course, this caused the newly created humans to have mental breakdowns. Worse, though, is that on top of everything, they discovered they were still property of the Monkey Meat company.
Now, as a huge fan of Juni Ba’s The Boy Wonder, I recognized the obvious Batman and Robin reference the second these two showed up. But I really liked the Jason Todd commentary Ba made through Monkey-Girl during their copyright testimony~ | “When I discovered I wasn’t real, I figured… at least I had inspired kids… Then I learned why the story of my death was even written. It was readers that who voted for it! And the damn creators who gave them the chance! Their definition of characters finally doing something new, I guess!”
But thankfully, when it was obvious the Monkey Meat Company was going to prevail, Monkeagle managed to break the fourth wall and got the two of them out there~
Craziest part of Lug’s story in Monkey Meat: The Summer Batch issue #2 was the fact that he tried to escape the Monkey Meat Company by jumping into the past before they existed, but in reality, he’d gone into the future. He saw that in his absence, the MM Company had destroyed the planet, causing the people to revert back to the Stone Age.
