Within this post, I started to take apart the rules of the Blood Pact and concluded that

a) during the three-way duel in Godric’s Hollow in 1899, Gellert wore the Blood Pact

b) the Blood Pact did not activate during the duel, so

…Gellert was unlikely to have WANTED to attack Albus during this duel.

So probably, if we go all technical, his spells were NOT aimed at Albus.

Now, by Aberforth’s description of the duel in Deathly Hallows. Albus stepped in to stop the duel.

And here is where I think things get interesting. Because we have TWO scenes that I was made aware of are quite close, but…not identical. They are parallels and I think, very much intentionally made so by the writers.

The three-way duel of Godric’s Hollow in 1899 and the three-way duel of Bhutan in 1932 (the latter being, admittedly, short, lol).

Both times, we have four participants in EXACTLY the same constellation. Albus, Aberforth, Gellert AND an Obscurial. Both times, the Blood Pact exists (though is it carried by different person).

But only the last time, the Blood Pact breaks. Now why is that so? There MUST be a crucial difference between the scenes. And, from all I can gather, the differences are:

In 1932, Albus is wearing the Blood Pact.

In 1932, Credence survives.

Forgive me if I disregard a), because I think it’s unlikely the boys made a pact that differentiated between who was wearing it. That wouldn’t work into the aim of the pact to begin with (aka to keep them BOTH from fighting each other). And even while Gellert was wearing the pact, Albus didn’t move against him…if the Blood Pact wouldn’t have affected him, why should he not have moved already before 1932?

Okay, let’s go on. So the crucial difference is, in 1932 Credence survives. But what are the implications?

By Albus’ words in SoD, Gellert wanted to KILL, while he wanted to protect. That is bluntly what he states to be the reason the blood pact broke. And Albus succeeded this time, Credence is alive.

But…wait…

What does this say about the duel in 1899???

It means that, during the duel in 1899, either Albus DIDN’t want to protect his siblings or else, Gellert DIDN’T want to kill. Because otherwise, the conditions would have been exactly the same as in Bhutan, 1932, and the pact would have broken in 1899 already.

And, frankly…I already pointed out, Gellert wouldn’t have wanted to hurt Albus. He didn’t want to kill him, thus wouldn’t have used a spell that had the potential to kill Albus. Albus, on the other…you cannot tell me that he didn’t want to protect his siblings, even then. :/ So Albus wasn’t the one to cast a spell capable of killing anyone, either.

It isn’t either that the Blood Pact takes the person the spell is aimed at into consideration, too! It did break when Gellert wanted to hurt/kill Aurelius, who is all but a stand-in for Ariana in this situation. Had Gellert wanted to hurt/kill Ariana, it should have broken, too.

So…uh…

Conclusion is, during the duel of 1899, ABERFORTH cast a spell capable of killing and probably killed his sister.

Alternatives:

Honestly, the first alternative I can think of is that the Blood Pact took into consideration the fact that hurting/killing Ariana was an accident. Meaning that, if either Albus or Gellert accidentally cast a spell that, in nature, would not have aimed to kill, but was too strong for Ariana, anyway, the Blood Pact would have registered the non-lethal intention and wouldn’t have activated/broken. We have not seen the clear nature of the Pact, only know through Albus that the Pact is sensitive enough to register even the THOUGHT of working against each other.

Which brings us to a second alternative that is, imo, even darker (yay). If we assume that the Blood Pact works in that it registers all actions Albus& Gellert take that would work AGAINST a collaboration, as in, it would activate the second one of them thinks to scheme against the other…and it didn’t activate, neither break through the duel in 1899…and Gellert did enter the duel with the intention to hurt/kill Ariana….

…then the Blood Pact did not consider that an act AGAINST the partnership, but as an act STRENGTHENING it. The magic within the Blood Pact would have considered Ariana’s death something BENEFITTING the relationship of Albus&Gellert. Holy shit, how macabre is that. :O (And, obvi, that did not work out in reality.)
