Targeting is when your pet is following a target (hand, pen, or target stick). Target training can be useful as a foundation skill for many behaviors, such as going into a crate, sitting, down, getting on the couch, getting off the couch, even a "spin" trick. Dogs have opposition reflex, which means when we push on any part of his body, he's going to push back. Training him to sit by pushing down on his rump is not very effective, he's going to resist. It can have impact on his joints and cause unpleasant feeling. [The trainer] then looked directly at my partner and asked, “Can you handle this?” The challenge and implications of his question were clear: this is what it takes to train your dog.” The most abusive people I know (knew) used this same tactic in every relationship they had: using pain and fear to manipulate behavior and then justifying the pain and fear they caused by saying, “This is just how it is. Get used to it. That’s life.” Just as fear and pain work to change human and dog behavior, those tactics will also cause aggression, anxiety, and a whole host of other behavioral problems in addition to ruining your relationship(s). I hope you all know that it’s not necessary to use pain and fear to change behavior in your friends and family. It’s also not necessary to change our pets’ behavior. ・・・ This is Larkin as a puppy shortly after we adopted him and days before he would meet his first trainer. I’ve thought long and hard about sharing this story. I’ve thought about how to share it and how much of it to share. It was hard to write, but silence is harder. I share this because I know I’m not alone. Putting words to our experiences and shedding light on what happens to dogs in the name of training is necessary.
