Targeting is when your pet is following a target (hand, pen, or target stick). Target training can be useful as a foundation skill for many behaviors, such as going into a crate, sitting, down, getting on the couch, getting off the couch, even a "spin" trick. Dogs have opposition reflex, which means when we push on any part of his body, he's going to push back. Training him to sit by pushing down on his rump is not very effective, he's going to resist. It can have impact on his joints and cause unpleasant feeling. Aww yeah, it is International Zookeeper Day! Here is a little flashback to one of my first zookeeping job at the very unique Disney’s Discovery Island. I like the group shot because if you look closely you will see where my parrot has taken two little nibbles from the corner of the photo. This 11-acre island zoo no longer exits as a zoo, however it was a very cool place and I know important to those of us who passed through there. Many of us were given important opportunities to grow and develop there. Our bird show team was allowed to completely revamp our show. What inspired us was attending a conference and seeing what others were doing.
