Feminism is an old and dynamic social-political movement that has been adapted and redefined many times, because of the complex nature of the patriarchy and related issues, and it's often misinterpreted. We believe feminism is about social, legal and economic equality of the sexes.
Let's take a look at the waves of feminism. The first-wave feminism (19th to early 20th century) focused on legal issues: women's suffrage, property rights, political candidacy, working condition and educational rights.
The second wave feminism (1960s to 1980s) was about dismantling systematic sexism, focusing on de facto inequalities: inequalities in sexuality, family, workplace, reproductive rights and cultural inequalities.
The third wave feminism (1990s to early 2000s) is often targeted by people who try to discredit feminism, but it's not what they think it is. It focused on embracing individualism and racial diversity and acknowledged the role of race in treatment of women (intersectionalism). It tried to break gender roles to the benifit of women and men.
Fourth wave feminism (2008 to present) is said to be centred around social media. It aims to combat sexual harrassment (including the #MeToo movement), violence against women, misogyny, rape culture, gender norms, body shaming etc. This is what we see in the internet nowadays. The waves of feminism sometimes contradict each other. We intend to internalize and synthesize the best qualities of all the waves.
Feminism has been misinterpreted and opposed many times during the course of its long history, whether because of harmless misunderstanding or straight up systematic misogyny. Anti-feminist and meninist movements have been used to oppose feminism. There is also a group of misandrist misusing feminism. But we believe in feminism as a movement for gender equality.
We intend on collecting the various views and ideas of talented people here, and share our own views and thoughts, all in a peaceful manner. Let’s bring down the patriarchy together!
