--- spoilers for Steven Universe, season 1 ---
Steven Universe, Peridot
Peridot is an aroace character. she doesn't want to fuse, which some interpret as sex/romance. she's slightly repulsed by it. fusion is also romantic, as that's what Garnet is. a romantic fusion. Peridot is confused as to why Garnet wants to be a fusion, why she wants to exist.
so, with all this evidence of her being aroace, and we know Steven Universe has amazing queer rep, it only seems fit that we ship her and completely ignore this, right?
people ship Peridot with Lapis Lazuli.
as an aroace person, our representation has been robbed from us.
it always is.
oh, but the moment we ship a canon lesbian character with a guy/something along the lines with that, THEN it's too far?
yeah okay.
This is aphobia. And honestly I believe it comes from people not even trying to explore our identities and our experiences, or even recognize that it is there to begin with. It is way easier to just make a headcannon and forget about the original intention and go to the same allo shipping you have done for every single character. But people are aware about this kind of erasure in more known groups inside the LGBTQIA+ community, and question headcannons that can fall on that. And that is great, but everyone should be more aware about this happening to Aspecs characters too! Specially with how often it occurs. -Minesweeper
