Chapter 1: Time is a Cruel Mistress
Seeing him took her back, back to that night where she was beaten and tortured, begging to be rescued. The night where she lost the closest person to her.Â
The one where she cried so much, she couldnât talk for the next few days after. Maybe she could or maybe she chose not to.Â
Talking entailed talking about him, her brother Parker who was supposedly dead. Reliving the memories that gave her so much joy. Trying to remember the smile that once struck his face. All that was too hard. So no talking it was.
But now, all she wanted to do was talk and scream and throw a fit as he stood 3 feet in front of her.
The brother she thought she had bid farewell to 3 years ago stood in front of her. Rosie observed the creases that adorned his face, marking his age. He was different. Parker appeared sadder and more lost unlike the last time she saw him. No longer her lively and happy brother.Â
Just from the looks of his face, she could read the burden he had faced. His eyes drooped, revealing tired bags under them. And his smile seemed to have disappeared. Lost but hopefully not forgotten.
For Rosie seeing him for the first time, since that fateful night, memories came flooding back of the children they were together.Â
Only glimpses, but thatâs all there was. Life was always so sheltered for the both of them. Explanations wouldnât be give as to why Tom would come home bloodied and beaten. But now Rosie was living that life. Â
Someday, going to have to explain to her kids the life their mommy led. She was envious of Parker in that way. He managed to escape, but in one fell swoop losing everything he loved most.
Memories tried to make their way into Rosieâs mind but she just sat there, resolute and bound to a chair waiting for a worthwhile excuse that would never come. Parker would never understand the pain and suffering, everyone went though grieving him.
Parker honestly had no clue how to talk to Rosie. After all the years, he didnât know if they could ever be the same kids they were. âWhat, no hugs for your long lost brother?â Parker quipped, stepping into the light. Highlighting all his features.
âYou tied me up, dumbass,â Rosie remarked. Markings from the rope imprinting on her skin. âAnd what for? Thought Iâd run if I knew it was you?â
âI donât know. The last thing you remember is me being dead,â Parker reminded her. âIt kind of screws with peoplesâ mind when the see an alive person who is meant to be dead.â
âYouâre not a zombie, P. There was no point in kidnapping me,â Rosie rolled her eyes so far they almost got stuck behind her head.Â
âI missed you. Is that enough? It is our birthday, for god sakes!â Parker exclaimed.
âBefore I admit that I missed you too, how are you alive? Parker, we all buried you and cried over you. This entire time youâve been alive!?!â Rosie demanded, begging for answers.
âIâm sorry. I really am. I left to keep you all safe. Carter threatened me.â Parkerâs head hung low, the guilt consuming him.
âCarter? Heâs alive?â Rosie asked, fearful of his answer.
âNo. Heâs dead, I made sure of it.â
âIf you knew he was dead, why did you leave?â Rosie pleaded, pushing back the tears that pricked at her eyes.
âHe mentioned other mobsters willing to come out of the wood work who had intimate knowledge of a pretty penny for my head.â Parkerâs voice grew low, trailing off.
âWhy didnât you just come to dad? He wouldâve known what to do,â Rosie begged.
âI risked everyoneâs lives once, I wasnât going to make that a regular thing.â
âAs sweet and endearing as making us think you perished in the flames, I can and have been taking care of myself.â Rosie had grown up a lot since he last saw her. No longer his timid but sweet sister, now she was a force to be reckoned with.
Grown men were said to cower at her name. Rosie had made a name for herself.
âI know, Ms. Big Shot mobster. As a matter of fact you stole my job,â Parker joked.
âWell sorry not sorry, you faked your death. What was I supposed to do, give up the crown for your burned body.â
âYeah, yeah. Water under the bridge.â
âI think we are just about to cross that bridge now. Now, tell me what you have been doing these past 3 years.â Rosie quickly changed the subject.
âWhat the fuck do you mean Rosie is missing? She was kidnapped?â Tom thundered, as you tried to calm him down. Rubbing soft circles on his back.Â
âI donât know, possibly. All I know is that I left her at the cemetery and she told me Jared was picking her up,â Linus contributed.
âLinus you donât know shit. I donât understand why you left her alone in the first place. Jared, when did you speak to Rosie?â Henry inquired.
âI never did, I only received a text from her saying you were taking her out to a special birthday dinner and you would be picking her up.â Jared informed the group.Â
âCan someone just figure out where my daughter is?â You pleaded.
âYes of course Mrs. Holland, I will send out soldiers right now to look for her.â
âThank you Jared.â You praised him as you stole glimpses of your rather distraught husband. âTom?â You spoke, breaking his intense glare at the floorboards.
âYes, love,â Tomâs words were almost a reflex. No thought went into them in situations like this, ones that were all too familiar.
âThinking that. I know what you are thinking and itâs not going to happen,â you tried to assure your husband but, you were just as scared as he was.
âY/N itâs too familiar to not think of that.â Tom whispers watching you try to hold back tears. He couldnât help himself. That night was branded into his memory.Â
He already lost his son, he wasnât about to loose his daughter as well. He wouldnât be able to handle it, eventually it would grow easier as it did with losing Parker. But Tom knew it would devastate you, to bury your only living child.Â
âSo I loved your life story, but do you want to untie me? I know there are some people at a party thrown for yours truly that would love to see you P,â Rosie pleaded. He had already been gone for too long.Â
âRosie, as much as I would love that. I canât risk your life or momâs or dadâs,â Parker reminded her.
âNothing has happened to us, we are safe and you could be too.â
âYou were kidnapped today!âÂ
âBy you. Parker! I promise you nothing will happen,â Rosie exclaimed.
âWhat if they donât want to see me? I mean I did fake my death and left the rest of you to grieve.â
âTrust me, they want to see you. Now come on, how much longer do I have to pretend that I am actually tied up.â
âYou got out? How?â Parker asked dumbfounded.
âI have my ways. A mobster never reveals her secrets.â Rosie quipped, winking as she revealed her unrestrained wrists.
âI promise you Tom, we will get her back,â Linus chirped in trying to be on good graces with you and Tom. Tom just nodded in response.
âLinus, weâve been here before. The last time... we lost Parker. We canât let that happen again. We need to act now. She could be dead by now,â Henry exclaimed.
âHenry, calm down. Letâs wait until we receive demands for her return. She came home last time, this time wonât be any different.â Linus tried to look on the bright side.
âYou arenât doing anything!! If 3 years ago was handled any differently Parker would still be here.â
âHenry, do I have to remind you that Rosie is the boss of a very powerful mob, she will be fine.â
âThat is the love of my life, Iâm not going to sit here and wait.â Henry said, quickly grabbing his keys and straight line for the door.
âWoah stop, Rosie would never forgive me if I let you go and you ended up hurt.â Linus called out, blocking the only exit.
âGet out of my fucking way, Iâm a grown ass man who can save his girlfriend without help from her dumb consigliere.â
âWhy donât you sit your ass back down and let the real men handle it, mob wife,âLinus jeered.
âWhat the fuck did you call me?â
âA mob wife. Thatâs what you are. You have no idea what Rosie does, you donât even bother. Itâs clear who wears the pants in your relationship because if you were half the man I am you wouldnât be staying at home while Rosie takes care of business. I will never understand why she is with you. You canât offer her anything in this life.â
âFirst of all fuck you. Second, I bet you donât even know she has felt someone following her everywhere she goes lately. When are you going to stop playing fast and loose with lives. When you a burying another body? It could be someone you love next time. I wonât just sit here and twiddle my thumbs. Iâm going to find her with or without you.â
âI didnât know that. Geez that girl needs to tell me things. Letâs goââ
âWhatâs with all the screaming?â Rosie chimes in walking through the double doors of her office, which was formerly Tomâs.Â
Henry immediately dives into her arms. She is his home. Where ever she is, is where he feels the safest. Her takes in her familiar and calming scent, remembering all the reasons why he loves her.Â
âHenry, Iâm okay. Baby, Iâm okay. Not even scratch on me. See?â Rosie whispers as Henry finally breaks away. âEveryone, I want you to meet someone.... Itâs okay, come in.â Rosie waves in the mystery man with the flick of her wrist.
Everyone gasps as Parker walks through the door.
âParker... I.. uh... you diedâ
âWe thought you were dead. We buried someone. We cried until we couldnât anymoreâ
âThey blew up the warehouse. How could anyone survive that?â
âYouâve been hiding from us? For 3 years?â
âIâm sorry. I never meant to hurt any of you. Mom? Can you please say something?â
âUmm, you left us. Why? Iâm too hurt words donât mean much. I donât know what to say.â
âTomorrow, I need to think about all of this. Rosie glad you are okay. Happy birthday to both of you. Iâm sorry everyone but Iâm going to turn in. Tom, you coming?â You asked politely, as to not offend anymore.
âYes of course, darling. Happy birthday sweetheart,â Tom said, pressing his lips to Rosieâs forehead. âItâs good to have you back Parker, sheâll come around. Happy birthday to you too son.â
âWell, I think that is enough surprises for one night.â Henry said, turning to the door.
âOh no party, thank god,â Rosie murmured sarcastically.
âAt least pretend that you liked it. Are you coming bed?â
âThat I can do, love. Iâll be there in a minute.â
âSo, is it as bad as you thought?â
âWorse, mom couldnât even look at me.â
âGive her some time, she took everything the hardest. I was a close second, I was your twin after all. But mom, left everything behind, the house, her friends and even me. She wouldnât let herself be reminded of you everywhere she looked. This is her first time back in the house since she left a year and a half ago. She only cakes because of my, I mean our birthday. Wow thatâs going to be weird, Iâm now a sibling again,â Rosie pestered
âHey you were always a sibling,â Parker exclaimed hurt by her words.
âWell you pretended to be dead for 3 years, so I think Iâm off the hook.â
âWhen are you going to stop throwing that back in my face?â
âI donât know maybe like 10 years, 3 for years you were gone and the rest for the misconstrued grief.â
âIâm sorry, but do you think mom will ever forgive me. I didnât know she took it so hard.â
âYeah we all did. She will come around eventually Park. Are you going to go to bed? Your room is still your room, none of us bothered to touch it.â
âSure sis, thanks. Happy 20th birthday.â
âThank you, you too. Night P.â
âHey, I thought you would be asleep by now? Whatâs keeping you up?â Rosie asked, seeing Henry consumed in his books with all the lights lite in their bedroom.
âWell I realized I never gave you your present,â Henry grinned, pulling a small box from behind his back. One too big to hold a diamond.
âOoo, gimmie gimmie.â Rosie cheered all eager. The girl was not one to turn down gifts. âHenry itâs beautiful.â There sat at white gold locket with a stenciled pattern adorning the top.Â
âAnything for you love. Alright I think itâs time we turn out the lights,â
âWait, I have something for you,â Rosie said trying to suppress her smile.
âWhat? Itâs your birthday, you are supposed to be getting presents, not giving them.â
âHush you, itâs something small. But holds a lot of value. Now close your eyes and hold out your hands.â
âAlright,â Henry replies skeptical of her antics.
Rosie quickly rummaged through her purse, looking for his gift. She sat down and placed the item in his hands.Â
âOkay, you can open now.â Rosie said, trying to keep her smile at bay.
Henry stared down at his hands as the largest grin crept on his face. Staring back at him was the pregnancy test, Rosie had taken earlier. It read, pregnant, confirming the diagnosis with two pink lines.
âAre you serious? Youâre pregnant?â Henry asked, unable to keep his smile under control.
âYes, baby. Iâm pregnant. Weâre pregnant.â
âOh my god we are going to have a baby. Iâm so happy, Iâm not even thinking about the fact that you peed on this. Come here, love.â Henry grinned, pulling Rosie into his lap.Â
Rosie, in the same moment, had everything she ever wanted, a purpose with Henry, and was a hair away from screwing everything up. With their lives it wasnât enough to just love each other. Especially not the love with little to no passion. A common goal was necessary.Â
Rosie sure did love Henry, but love fades. They werenât the same kids, experiencing the thrill of a first love.Â
Then, everything was new and exciting. Just the idea of Henryâs lips places they shouldnât be, made Rosieâs heart pump. She was completely and utterly consumed in him and he the same.
But now, life grew messy and complicated. The little things she once adored about him, only offered grimaces toppled with annoyance.
They have lost each other and their baby was just the needed answer.
