We’ve been dwelling in the music-rife towns of England for much of the evening so far, but let’s now take a trip across the English Channel to relish in a glorious treat from French newcomers MNNQNS (pronounced mannequins), who already have a debut album scheduled to drop this fall. They inundate us with jagged guitars, pounding drums, and intense vocals on youthful romping, spunky cavorting Desperation Moon. It’s a mighty catching mixture of garage punk, garage pop, and rocking swagger, with a touch of wiry math rock. The video for Desperation Moon was shot by Florent “Woods” Dubois in Montreux, Switzerland. Explaining the lavish backdrop, the band says: "The song lyrics being basically about wanting things that you can’t have, it was totally appropriate to shoot the video in a $500 suite at the Victoria Hotel. The swimming pool was a bit cold though." MNNQNS’ debut album Body Negative is due for release on October 11th via FatCat Records. Pre-order, here.

Un pari osé donc pour MNNQNS, quatuor bien français qui n’a bien heureusement pas cédé aux sirènes de sa langue natale pour chanter dans le vrai langage du rock : celui de Shakespeare et des Talking Heads. Après deux EP prometteurs et une immense tournée (à l’échelle) supervisée par l’influente Société Ricard Live Music (dénicheuse récurrente de talents hexagonaux), MNNQNS délivre donc un premier album attendu, et plus fidèle que jamais à sa mantra. Même si le disque ne s’interdit pas quelques tubes, calibrés mais toujours honnêtes (”Fall Down”, “Desperation Moon”, “Different Sides of Truth”), les quatre musiciens n’en oublient pas pour autant leur art subtil de la tromperie, de l’angle mort pop (le hurlant “Urinals” en plein cœur d’une fausse accalmie, l’arythmie tout au long de “Double Visions”). Un disque plutôt réussi en somme, fort de sa cohérence, et qui témoigne une fois de plus d’une scène française qui recrache ses références anglo-saxonnes sans sourciller – et avec fierté, en plus. La moelle est intacte, et la colonne vertébrale de MNNQNS, malgré ses twists et ses scolioses sonores, semble plus solide que jamais.
